Rule #1: Use commas to separate three or more items in a series. I went to the store and bought eggs, milk, and bread. Rule #2: Use a comma to show a pause after an introductory word. Yes, I am going to the dance with my friends. No, I did not forget to do my homework. Rule #3: Use a comma after two or more propositional phrases at the beginning of a sentence. Rule #4: Use commas to set off words that interrupt the flow of thought in a sentence. My sister, of course, has to do what I do. Joey, I think, is my cousin. Rule #5: Use commas to set off names used in direct address. Ms. Salazar, may I please go to the restroom? Sit in your seat, Mary.

Rule #6: Use a comma before and, or, or but when it joins simple sentences into a compound sentence. Jessica wrote a funny story, and she decided to share it with the class. Rule #10: Use commas before and after the name of a state or a country when it is used with the name of a city. *No comma between state and ZIP code! The address on the envelope was 42 Campus Drive, Harlingen, TX 78550. Rule #11: Use a comma or pair of commas to set off an abbreviated title or degree following a person’s name. Norman E.
