According to Sendhil Mullainathan in the article “Racial Bias, Even When We Have Good Intentions” states that there is an “impressive body of research spanning decades…and leads to some uncomfortable conclusions…”(1). Evidently this body of research would prove the existence of bias in our society. Numerous studies are listed, one of the more impactful ones was on race and employment. A 2009 Harvard study had a “sobering finding …that African -American applicants with no criminal record were offered jobs at a rate as low as white applicants who had criminal records” (3). Clearly this shows a measurable bias in how people are hired. Economic impact goes beyond the ability to get hired, “Even eBay auctions were not immune. When iPods were auctioned on eBay, researchers randomly varied the skin color on the hand holding the iPod. A white hand holding the iPod received 21 percent more offers than a black hand” (4). This is significant because we live in a society where everything is supposed to be equal. Thus, the twenty-plus studies referenced in this article do highlight the existence of bias in our American society, and the economic effects it has on individual people.
