1 Renewable and Nonrenewable Resources

2 Objectives We will identify alternative resources and explore the process that led to the formation of fossil fuels. I will explain the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources. 5.7A - Explore the processes that led to the formation of sedimentary rocks and fossil fuels. (Readiness Standard) 5.7C - Identify alternative energy resources such as wind, solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, and biofuels. (Readiness Standard) 5.7D - Identify fossils as evidence of past living organisms and the nature of the environments at the time using models. (Supporting Standard)

3 Renewable Resources Alternative Energy
A resource which is replaced naturally and can be used again.

4 Nonrenewable Resources Alternative Energy
Geothermal Energy Thermal (heat) energy generated and stored in the Earth

5 Nonrenewable Resources Alternative Energy
Hydroelectric Energy Electricity produced by the movement of water.

6 Nonrenewable Resources Alternative Energy
Wind Energy Power produced by the movement of wind, using wind turbines.

7 Nonrenewable Resources Alternative Energy
Solar Energy Energy generated from the sun using solar panels.

8 Nonrenewable Resources Alternative Energy
Biofuels A fuel produced from living organisms.

9 Nonrenewable Resources Fossil Fuels
Any natural resource from the Earth that exists in limited supply and cannot be replaced, or replenished, if it is used up. Petroleum (Oil) Formed from the remains of animals and plants that lived millions of years ago in a marine (water) environment. Coal Formed from energy that was stored in plants that lived hundreds of millions of years ago in swamp forests. Natural Gas Forms when layers of buried plants, gases, and animals are exposed to intense heat and pressure over thousands of years. Found in rocks, which hold the gas like a sponge.

10 Fossil Fuels How are they formed?

11 How is petroleum formed?
Let’s Think! How is coal formed? How is petroleum formed?

12 Think: Why should we conserve fossil fuels?
Keep it conservative! Think: Why should we conserve fossil fuels? Pair with your neighbor and discuss your reasons. Together, identify three ways we can conserve our fossil fuels Share your reasons with the class.

13 In your journal…. I will explain the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources.
Using a double-bubble map, compare and contrast renewable and nonrenewable resources. List all similarities and differences discussed. Double-Bubble Map

14 Final Thoughts Think: What are some pros and cons of renewable (alternative) energy? Nonrenewable energy? Share: With your neighbor, discuss your thoughts. Independently: In your journal, answer the following question, using the ideas you just discussed. Your answer should be no shorter than three sentences. If renewable energy is better for the environment, and easy to replace, why are they not our primary source of energy?
