2 Jamestown: The Trip to America Was funded by wealthy investors who put their money in a joint-stock company, called the “Virginia Company of London” Charter- Permission from the King to start a colony. Also laid out the rules that the investors wanted followed. The English thought they were going to find gold and iron ore.

4 Jamestown: The Town Itself Where to build the community? How to build the community? They decided on a small fort that would be easy to protect. Captain John Smith

5 Jamestown: Living Conditions The living conditions in Jamestown were not much better than on the ship. Many of the people were Gentlemen, not farmers. Poor crop harvests and poor leadership. Disease The winter of 1609 was particularly bad.

6 Food and Other Crops Many of the Settlers learned to grow corn and tobacco from the Indians. Corn was used for food. Tobacco was sent back to Europe. Had it not been for these, the colonies never would have survived.

7 Vocabulary Charter- a written contract issued by a government giving the holder the right to establish a colony. Joint-Stock Company-a business in which investors pool their wealth in order to turn a profit. Indentured Servant- a person who sold his or her labor in exchange for passage to America. House of Burgesses- Created in 1619, the first representative assembly in the America colonies

8 Plymouth Colony The Pilgrims were people who were tired of religious persecution in England. First moved to Holland to get away, and later to America on the Mayflower. They were trying to go just north of Jamestown, but got blown off course and wound up in Plymouth.

9 Plymouth Colony Like Jamestown, the early months in Plymouth colony were horrible for the residents. However, it was because of the friendly Indians that they were able to survive. Thanksgiving

10 Mayflower Compact The Mayflower Compact was a signed agreement between all of the colonists to create fair laws and uphold them.
