{ Introduction to Painting and Drawing Learning to Draw Realistically!

Are you interested in learning how to draw people that look like people? Are you interested in learning how to paint in oils? How about learning to draw still life objects so realistically they might “fool the eye” of viewers into thinking your picture is a photograph ? What’s in it for YOU?

This course is all about drawing and painting because its based on the historical time period of the Renaissance (1400 – 1500’s) right through to the Neoclassic movement (1800’s). During these four hundred years artists became terrific at drawing people and objects and working with oil paints and other drawing media. Art History…

The work you do this year is important background experience for the next two courses in this series, Advanced Painting and Drawing and AP Studio Art. The skills you will build this year are needed for those courses whose projects are meant to be advanced enough to put into a college portfolio. In AP Studio you will actually decide on your own projects and choose your own media. But you have to learn to walk before you can run. Your Future in Art….

So get ready to stroll with me as we learn about the history of art, the principles of design and all kinds of drawing and painting media. In addition to all that, you’ll practice thinking creatively and making your own decisions as an artist and that might be the most important requirement of all! Thinking like an artist….

You can’t create in a vacuum. You need to know something about the world of art in order to make good decisions about your own art. Therefore there will be some lessons and assignments about art and art history. You are expected to take notes on lectures and demonstrations in your sketch book You will have written assignments You will have drawing assignments as homework You will be required to participate in and attend the High School Art Show in May. This is part of your final exam grade Requirements

You will, of course, be expected to follow the MHS expectations of : Be Responsible (for your work, your materials and the art room), Be Respectful (to each other, to me and to the art room environment) and Be Proud of all you do in here! Behavior….

{ Procedures 1. 1. Please come to class on time and put your belongings on the shelves provided. 2. 2. Get your portfolio, your project and your supplies and sit in your assigned seat. 3. 3. Listen carefully whenever directions, demonstrations or teacher comments occur. Please do not speak to someone else while I am speaking to the class. 4. 4. Ask permission to use the lavatory and sign out and in on the sheet provided. 5. 5. Clean up when given the signal to do so. Clean your desk and your equipment. Store your work carefully. 6. 6. Stay in your seat until I dismiss you. Knowing what to do and when to do it!

Sketchbooks, drawing and painting media and a portfolio will be provided. If you have trouble meeting your due dates for projects you may come in after school on Studio Hour nights or any other night with special arrangements. You may also come in during any study hall. Other Items of Interest…

So-so effort 4 = I have to really hunt to find evidence of this requirement. 2 = You missed the point of this requirement. Little effort made to show me you are interested. 0 = missed this one completely! What do your points mean???

Like most of life you will only get as much out of this course as you are willing to put into it. Setting goals about what you want to learn, how you want your art to improve, where you’d like to see yourself as an artist, the grade you hope to get in this course, etc. will help you focus and get the most you can out of this year.
