2 Standard 8-6.3 Explain the reasons for the depressed conditions in the textile mills and on the farms in SC and other regions of the United States in the 1920’s and the impact of these conditions on the coming of the Great Depression

3 Bad, good, bad, ugly…. Pre-war: cotton prices fell, over supply Farmers had it good during the war years – Textile for uniforms and food for war-torn Europe Troops came home from war – Demand for cotton went down as did prices Boll weevil- some years destroyed ½ the crop Like rice, cotton is done for by end of 1920’s – Hello peaches and livestock…..

4 Installment plan catches up…. Farmers bought necessities during the war years to keep up with demand – Land, equipment and pesticides Once war was over farmers stopped making money….. – No money no payment of loans Result= – Farmer losses his farm-  flees to the mills Bank forecloses due to not getting their money

5 Textiles New Fashions = new materials – Nylon replaces cotton and shorter skirts mean less material South Carolina was an attracting place because of their improved mill villages (running water and electricity) as well as a ready supply of cheap labor. Not a happy ending…. – Overproduction and layoffs would eventually hit SC hard
