Nanorama Laboratory – a 360° virtual environment of a laboratory M.Sc. Christian Schumacher Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance (IFA) 1st PEROSH Research Exchange Meeting on Translational Research in Occupational Health and Safety, 22 October 2015, Warsaw

Content Risk assessment for nanomaterial - are we on target? Assessment strategy Evaluation of risk management measures Rethink the assessment strategy Content, structure and intervention Why a Nanorama? 3 History of IFA 1935 - Foundation Dust-Combating Agency in Berlin 1948 - Rebuilding of the Dust Research Agency in Bonn 1980 - German Social Accident Insurance Institution for trade & industry (BG) institute for occupational safety (BIA) in Sankt Augustin 2003 - Institute for occupational safety & health (BGIA) 2007 - Institute for Occupational Safety and Health of the German Social Accident Insurance 2010 - Change of abbreviation from BGIA to IFA Christian Schumacher, IFA 3

Assessment strategy In occupational safety and health (OSH) we are quite advanced regarding risk assessment of handling nanomaterial We began at the „protection side“ by evaluating risk management measures (RMM) When the chosen RMM are adequate = no further action needed We tested filters and explain the workers why filters are working even for nanoparticles However, we have seldom explained why they should wear respiration protection equipment & why they should avoid to wear it STOP principle Christian Schumacher, IFA 4

STOP Substitution Avoid Dust-generating nanomaterial Avoid aerosol generation Avoid biopersistent or rigid fibrous nanomaterial Technical protective measures Glove box, Fume cup, Local exhaust ventilation… Avoid recirculation Organizational protective measures Restricted access, limited working time Training and targeted instructions Personal protective measures Dustproof protective suit Gloves, Googles, Filter (class P2) or isolation equipment Christian Schumacher, IFA 5

Evaluation of risk management measures Christian Schumacher, IFA 6

Are we on target? Efficiency control of RMM is a task for specialists Consequently, regarding risk communication we begun on the wrong side, several steps in front of the target group – the worker!!! Suggestion to rethink and aligning the target by consensus & commitment driven communication Don´t present the target group a solution for a problem they do not understand Help to understand and face the problem and try to come together with the target group to a solution that feels tailor-made for the worker Christian Schumacher, IFA 7

Rethink the assessment strategy Suggestion: an approach of small steps, worker & OSH expert (like occupational hygienists), starting from information gathering & ending by decision on adequate RMM Content Training based on role and knowledge & realistic demands System Trial based (cf. circumstantial evidence) Intervention Participation of all stakeholders = roles RMM in dialogue and commitment with persons concerned Christian Schumacher, IFA 8

Risk inventarisation Nano 1 st step is a central information help desk, examples are: http://www.nanotechia.org/activities/reach-nano-help-desk http://www.nanocentre.nl/index.aspx?id=262 = In Germany? in the EU? 2 nd step is to build up trained eyes that can complaint handling with nanomaterial like: DGUV PORTAL NANO: http://nano.dguv.de/ ; example Nanorama laboratory of German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the raw materials & chemical industry (BG RCI) http://nano.dguv.de/ Nano to go: http://www.baua.de/en/Research/Research-Project/f2268.html http://www.baua.de/en/Research/Research-Project/f2268.html Christian Schumacher, IFA 9

Risk evaluation Nano 3 rd step is the qualification of experts to evaluate the complaint, based on the known tiered approaches, to record and to communicate the evidence for Nanoscale & Hazard; Emission & Exposure = Announcement on Hazardous Substances 527 Manufactured nanomaterials; example nanoGRAVUR 4 th step is to consult specialists in evaluating the efficiency of RMM http://www.dguv.de/ifa/Fachinfos/Nanopartikel-am-Arbeitsplatz/Beurteilung- von-Schutzmaßnahmen/index-2.jsphttp://www.dguv.de/ifa/Fachinfos/Nanopartikel-am-Arbeitsplatz/Beurteilung- von-Schutzmaßnahmen/index-2.jsp Christian Schumacher, IFA 10

German Social Accident Insurance Institution for the raw materials & chemical industry Established on 1 January 2010 by merging the institutions for statutory accident insurance and prevention for mining, the chemical industry, the leather industry, paper making, the quarrying and sugar it covers almost 35,000 companies; 1.4 million insured employees The expenditure for prevention in 2014 was € 100.980.000,00 Christian Schumacher, IFA 12
