EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January4 Activities in the field of this functions (a) Represent Europe in global/international grid fora (such as OGF): The European representation of Grid Research e-Infrastructures should be handled by the EGI institute and its management (directorship and/or representatives from the NGI Policy Committee). If technical input is required, then the appropriate skilled personnel should do the representation. –See Management of the EGI Organisation function for more details on the management structure. –This is also linked with the standardisation function. (b) Establish links with other major stakeholders including major projects and NGIs: EGI should liaise with other major stakeholders such as the research networking community (GEANT/NRENs), Supercomputing community (DEISA/PRACE), Industry (through appropriate bodies), as well as with major infrastructure projects, regional, application and support ones, and finally NGIs. (c) Establish links with ESFRI: liaise with the ESFRI group and the ESFRI roadmap projects, with the aim of promoting the use of the EGI infrastructure by the major research infrastructure facilities.

EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January10 Goal, Advantages and Location Goal –The goal for the European Grid community is to be better represented in the international fora and also to harmonise national strategies Advantages –Promote their agendas to international fora –Getting aligned with each other –Promote the use of their national research infrastructure facilities Location –The EGI international cooperation team should be located wherever EGI main premises is located It is preferred for EGI international cooperation team to be centralised in one location

EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January11 Funding sources and sharing Co-funded by EGI and NGIs –EGI management, EGI international cooperation activity leader + support team –NGIs PC members could undertake some specific roles (e.g. interfacing with projects) The above work can be funded by the EC (as part of the EGI project) –Complemented by NGI unfunded effort (supported by the local NGI projects e.g. as part of their dissemination tasks) –By other EC projects or concertation projects

EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January14 Conclusions This function is quite straightforward The NGIs have categorised it as the most important one for the EGI central organisation –Clear and understandable role for EGI management and specific small team –Easily supported by the EC co-funded EGI project –NGIs high level members can contribute unfunded (NGI policy committee members)

EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January15 Other (challenging?) proposals Allow only national VOs –Prioritization in each NGI VO is given through VO sub-groups (or other technical way) –The cross-border collaboration of VO researchers is done through other means (network of excellence projects, task forces, mailing lists, etc.)  This requires the change of the Grid definition!  In this scenario each NGI is aware of what it supports/pays for  Specify policies for using other NGI VOs (e.g. according to the amount of resources contributed to the EGI infrastructure) Use “cloud computing” cycles/storage for new small communities and/or VOs? –Pay per usage principle (convenient for the central pool of resources) –Tender for industrial services
