Representation of European Grid efforts, international cooperation, and ESFRI EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshop, CERN Fotis Karayannis, GRNET

EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January2 Contents Why this function is needed in EGI Activities in the field of this function –Input and outputs of related actors Actors involved for a federated act –Who and how many people –Who triggers the technical actions Goal and advantages Funding sources Reporting scenarios

EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January3 Why this function is needed This function is required in order for the NGIs to be represented at different fora and enter into dialogue with corresponding entities in other continents or other groups Was the most popular function to be handled by EGI, as seen by NGIs according to the EGEE survey http://knowledge.eu-egi.org/index.php/2006_NGI_survey http://knowledge.eu-egi.org/index.php/2006_NGI_survey

EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January4 Activities in the field of this functions (a) Represent Europe in global/international grid fora (such as OGF): The European representation of Grid Research e-Infrastructures should be handled by the EGI institute and its management (directorship and/or representatives from the NGI Policy Committee). If technical input is required, then the appropriate skilled personnel should do the representation. –See Management of the EGI Organisation function for more details on the management structure. –This is also linked with the standardisation function. (b) Establish links with other major stakeholders including major projects and NGIs: EGI should liaise with other major stakeholders such as the research networking community (GEANT/NRENs), Supercomputing community (DEISA/PRACE), Industry (through appropriate bodies), as well as with major infrastructure projects, regional, application and support ones, and finally NGIs. (c) Establish links with ESFRI: liaise with the ESFRI group and the ESFRI roadmap projects, with the aim of promoting the use of the EGI infrastructure by the major research infrastructure facilities.

EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January5 Actors inputs/outputs (I) a) European Representation in global fora Inputs: –NGIs (NGI PC) (main constitutor) –Funding agencies / Resource owners (if not in NGI) –Application communities –Policy makers and e-IRG –Other infrastructure projects –Other stakeholders (NRENs, Supercomputing) –End users Output: –Constitute an interface to other major efforts (US, APAN) –Shape international strategies –Work on common standardisation efforts (e.g. similar to GIN – Grid Interoperability Now)
6
EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January6 Actors inputs/outputs (II) (b) Links with other stakeholders (including major projects) Input: –Subset of (a) Output: –Constitute an interface to other stakeholders –Promote concertation efforts –Harmonise National efforts (c) ESFRI Input: –Similar to (a), (b) Output: –Promote the use of EGI infrastructure by the ESFRI projects –Support e-IRG in the effort to become a horizontal layer for ESFRI –Promote the collaboration and use of major research facilities
7
EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January7 Actors involved for federated act A specific team/ group needs tackle the above tasks: –(a) NGI Policy Commitee representatives + Technical interfaces (task forces) –(b) similar –(c) NGI PC representatives – Links with e-IRG *It is not clear at present if EGI needs to hire and employ separate teams, or these can be provided by NGIs in the form of Task Forces
8
EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January8 Who and how many people EGI management interfaces (e.g. EGI director, deputy director and technical director), funded by other function (management function) - Part time: 0,2-0,3 FTEs each Representatives of NGI PC or EGI (2 FTEs usually funded by other sources) 1 FTE for the activity (0,75) and deputy (0,25) leader –Similar to EGEE NA5 1 group of 3 people half time to provide support for the projects interfacing and reporting (1,5 FTEs) –Similar to the RPLO (Related Projects Liaison Office)
9
EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January9 Who triggers the technical actions Input from technical activity leaders –middleware, operations And the support group –similar to RPLO
10
EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January10 Goal, Advantages and Location Goal –The goal for the European Grid community is to be better represented in the international fora and also to harmonise national strategies Advantages –Promote their agendas to international fora –Getting aligned with each other –Promote the use of their national research infrastructure facilities Location –The EGI international cooperation team should be located wherever EGI main premises is located It is preferred for EGI international cooperation team to be centralised in one location
11
EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January11 Funding sources and sharing Co-funded by EGI and NGIs –EGI management, EGI international cooperation activity leader + support team –NGIs PC members could undertake some specific roles (e.g. interfacing with projects) The above work can be funded by the EC (as part of the EGI project) –Complemented by NGI unfunded effort (supported by the local NGI projects e.g. as part of their dissemination tasks) –By other EC projects or concertation projects
12
EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January12 Reporting scenarios The international cooperation team reports to EGI management and the EGI management EGI management and NGI PC representatives report to NGI Policy Committee –Not all NGIs might be interested for this function
13
EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January13 Summary of comments received Links with technical functions (operations, middleware) will be required
14
EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January14 Conclusions This function is quite straightforward The NGIs have categorised it as the most important one for the EGI central organisation –Clear and understandable role for EGI management and specific small team –Easily supported by the EC co-funded EGI project –NGIs high level members can contribute unfunded (NGI policy committee members)
15
EGI_DS WP3 consolidation workshopCERN 29-31 January15 Other (challenging?) proposals Allow only national VOs –Prioritization in each NGI VO is given through VO sub-groups (or other technical way) –The cross-border collaboration of VO researchers is done through other means (network of excellence projects, task forces, mailing lists, etc.) This requires the change of the Grid definition! In this scenario each NGI is aware of what it supports/pays for Specify policies for using other NGI VOs (e.g. according to the amount of resources contributed to the EGI infrastructure) Use “cloud computing” cycles/storage for new small communities and/or VOs? –Pay per usage principle (convenient for the central pool of resources) –Tender for industrial services
