Project Management Projects are a way of bringing about change. They are used to develop new products and systems, or to alter the physical, social or cultural environment. The word ‘project’ is actually derived from the Latin verb proicere, which means ‘to throw forward’. A project is a leap into the future. Sebastian Nokes said (2003) international standards organization Project as:-“A set of co-ordinated activities, with a specific start and finish, pursuing a specific goal with constraints on time, cost and resources” Baguley Phil (1999) said ‘ A project is a sequence of connected events that are conducted over a defined and limited period of time and are targeted towards generating a unique but well defined outcome.’. 7-Jun-16 4

Types of project organisation 7-Jun-16 11 There are three main forms of project organisation. 1. Client-centred. The project team is integrated into the client organisation, working for the project on a part-time or informal basis. The project makes use of the organisation’s personnel, expertise and infrastructure. It probably shares the same premises. 2. Project-focused. Here the project team is completely separate. It has its own resources, staff and premises, and communicates through senior management. 3. Matrix project. This is a compromise between the other two positions. Project team members report to a functional manager within the organisation and also to the project manager.
