2 What is it? Definition: “previously known as manic depression - is a condition that affects your moods, which can swing from one extreme to another. If you have bipolar disorder you will have periods or 'episodes' of depression and mania.” Bipolar disorder is a relatively common with around one person in 100 being diagnosed. Bipolar can occur at any age, although it often develops in people who are between 18-24.

3 Treatments There are many different ways of treating bipolar, most frequently used is medication, however it is important that the patient continues to take the drugs after their symptoms have been relieved. The patient can also have a number of other treatments including seeing a psychiatrist and CBT. However its usually a mixture of more than one treatment that can affectively control the disorders symptoms.

4 The problems Bipolar disorder is very often misdiagnosed because of the nature of the disorder. It can be confused with unipolar disorder in the depression episodes. The medication is often stopped when it needs to continue and can affect different people in many different ways.
