What was the Irish Republic Army? - An Irish revolutionary military organisation - Splitted into different groups - Acronym: IRA - descended from the Irish Volunteers - established on 25.November 1913 - Were / are fighting for the souveranity of Ireland 3

History of the IRA The IRA is a millitary organisation orignated during the Easter Rising in 1916 based on the Irish Citizen Army and the Irish Volunteers Leaders decided to base a new army for the Republic 4

Aims of the IRA sees itself as a protector of Ireland and its people. In addition, it stands for the rights of every person in Northern Ireland However, it denies beeing a terrorist group. They want peace, but fight for it and are ready to die. 5

How they fight…. members are radical, armed fanatics who use to reach their purposes. Their activities are bomb attacks, taking of hostages, extortion, smuggling and raids. 6

Bloody Sunday 30th January 1972 A few thousand people meet for a demonstration in Derry / Londonderry to fight for the rights of the Catholics Within just a few hours the situation escalated after demonstrants meet highly-armed British 8

Bloody Sunday Also known as the Bogside Massacre, because the demonstrants were forced to stay in this part of the city ( Bogside ), where British Special Forces started shooting without a reason 14 people were shot by the British elite unit, 27 injured Bloody Sunday is one of the darkest days in Irish history and the fights between Catholics and Protestans 9

IRA in the media The media presents the IRA mostly as a group criminal murders. However, there is a high number of followers and sympathizers. Many people have the same opinion like the IRA, but they it shits that the IRA wants to solve the problems with the use of weapons 10

IRA in the 21th Century On 26th September, 2005 the entire disarmament of the IRA was announced. In 2009 there were once more a terrorist attacks to which "Real IRA" confessed. There are still different Groups of the IRA 12

End of the IRA Capitulation the IRA finished the civil war in 1922-1923 But it continued and recruited new members and trained them. The IRA was forbidden in 1931 and again in 1935 New groups of the IRA are still fighting and active ( for ex. „The Real IRA“ ) 13
