9. 1. Holbeck Hall was built in 1880 as a home for Charles Anderson-Smith and his family 3. In 1930 it became a hotel 4. The Turner family bought it in 1980 2. It was built in a mock Tudor style, with rose gardens and lawns between the house and the sea 6. On June 3 rd 1993 there was a huge landslip in the garden 7. Fortunately, everyone was able to be evacuated before the hotel collapsed 5. A landslip happened on the cliff below Holbeck Hall in 1982, and another in 1986 8. Within 24 hours most of the hotel had fallen onto the beach 11. Now there is nothing to be seen of the hotel – just a smooth grassy slope with a path on it 9. The remains of the hotel were unsafe, so they were demolished. 10. In 1997 the Turners tried to sue Scarborough council for failing to protect the cliff from slumping.
