2. Space is a major Element of Art The use of area within an artwork. There are 2 Main types of space: Positive (the STUFF: objects, shapes, subject of the picture) and Negative (the left over space). Space refers to the distances between lines and shapes. Space is created through perspective, giving a sense of space moving away from us in a picture (in other words, DEPTH)

8. What if…. We take the concept of SPACE in DESIGN (Think Piet Mondrian And combine it with The concept of SPACE in terms of PERSPECTIVE (Think Renaissance artists realistic creation of space) What would that look like? What if we combined Mondrian’s style with Perspective Technique?

9. Mondrian meets Perspective=Mondrian in Space

10. Step 1 Draw a rectangle on your page, keeping the horizontal and vertical lines parallel to the edges of your paper, and to each other.

11. Step 2 Place your Vanishing Point within the rectangle. Be careful to place it so it is not too close to any line, and it is not right in the middle either.

12. Step 3 Line your Vanishing point up with one corner of your rectangle, and draw out to the edge of the paper.

13. Step 4 Line your Vanishing point up with a different corner of your rectangle, and draw out to the edge of the paper.

14. Step 5 Line your Vanishing point up with the rest of the corners of your rectangle, and draw out to the edge of the paper.

15. Step 6 Erase the lines inside the rectangle – but eave the Vanishing Point there!

16. Step 7 Darken all of your lines so far.

17. Step 8 Add 4-7 Horizontal line to the inside of your rectangle. Be sure they are Parallel to the rectangle!

18. Step 9 Darken these lines

19. Step 10 Draw a Receding line out from where one of the horizontal lines touches the edge of the rectangle. Line that spot up with the Vanishing Point!

20. Step 11 Draw the rest of the Receding lines out from the edge of the rectangle. Line each spot up carefully with the Vanishing Point!

21. Step 12 Darken each of these receding lines from the rectangle out to the edge of the paper.

22. Step 13 Do the same 2 steps on the other side of the rectangle. Can you see the room ?

23. Step 14 Remember Mondrian’s Style? He broke his spaces up with vertical lines too. Add some vertical lines in the original rectangle, keeping them parallel again! Break your vertical lines up, so you wind up with a Mondrian, not a grid.

24. Step 15 Add some vertical lines on one of the walls coming towards us, keeping them parallel again! Break your vertical lines up, so you wind up with a Mondrian, not a grid. Make sure to let the spaces be bigger closer to the edge of the paper to enhance the space.

25. Step 16 Add some vertical lines to the other wall coming towards us, keeping them parallel again! Break your vertical lines up, so you wind up with a Mondrian, not a grid. Make sure to let the spaces be bigger closer to the edge of the paper to enhance the space.

26. Step 17 Erase a few line segments, both horizontal and vertical, to make it even less like a grid, and more like Mondrian

27. Step 18 CHALLENGE – Only do this step if you are caught up and need more challenge Draw receding lines on the roof and the floor – not very many – it is already crazy REMEMBER THESE WILL ALL GO TO THE VANISHING POINT!

28. Step 19 Utilize Mondrian’s TRIADIC color scheme (Red, Yellow, Blue) to add color to SELECT boxes. Create a clean composition Create Balance (Not too many boxes, and spread out)

29. Step 20 Continue to utilize Mondrian’s TRIADIC color scheme (Red, Yellow, Blue) to add color to SELECT boxes on the SIDE walls. Create a clean composition Create Balance (Not too many boxes, and spread out)

30. Step 21 Continue to utilize Mondrian’s TRIADIC color scheme (Red, Yellow, Blue) to add color to SELECT boxes on the SIDE walls. Create a clean composition Create Balance (Not too many boxes, and spread out)

31. Step 22 Challenge- Add color to the top and bottom (if you added it already) by making SHADES of one of your colors

32. Step 23 Go over all of your lines with a Sharpie marker to make them nice, dark, CLEAN black lines USE YOUR RULER!!!!!!
