5. Etching/ Intaglio The lines you scratch are black. Lines create value. Detail!! Look a lot like drawings. Printing press. Access to acid. Scratching into copper plates.

6. Serigraphy/ Screenprinting Block off areas of screen. (blocked areas=white) Posters, clothing, fabric. Large areas of color. Less detail. Very graphic. Shapes create value

7. Relief Printmaking Carved out of blocks of wood or linoleum. Carved lines are WHITE, not black. Lines and shapes create value. Medium detail—btwn etching and serigraphy.

8. Everything you cut away (relief) is white. The surface you leave raised holds value--solid or textured.

9. Different types of cuts (lines) give you different values and textures

18. Before we begin… Decide as a class if you would like to have a theme to your prints…either way, you will each receive a copy of every classmate’s print and they will all be bound together at the end of the unit. Some themes: MONSTERS, spring time, animals, what else???

19. Your Steps 1.Create 3 thumbnail sketches of possible designs How will you show detail? With lines or shapes? Do you want a border? What image would you want to see in multiples? How will you use this image? (just for class, print cards, on clothing?)
