1 Reception - Yr 1 Yr 2 – Yr 6

2 Little Big Maths and Big Maths
Big Maths is a teaching programme designed to help children to become numerate. It is a highly effective way to significantly strengthen your child’s numeracy journey. From September 2015 Big Maths is a teaching programme used at Broughto help children to become numerate. Problem solving and word problems cannot be solved until children can manipulate and understand how numbers work. Big Maths lessons are fast, fun and furious.

3 What does a “numerate” child look like?
Efficiency A numerate child uses an efficient strategy to carry out and solve problems without using too many steps. Accuracy A numerate child carefully records their workings, uses number facts and double check their results. Flexiblilty A numerate child knows more than one approach to solve a problem and can select the most appropriate strategy to solve and another to check.

4 Why do children need to do things quickly?
“[All pupils should] become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.” (Mathematics programmes of study: key stages 1 and 2 National curriculum in England: September 2013) It’s OK for a child to use their fingers to solve 5+4= but when they get to 50+40= they need to be able to use more effective mental strategies.

5 BIG MATHS HELPS TO CREATE NUMERATE CHILDREN
Why big maths? Big Maths is a highly effective way to significantly strengthen your child’s numeracy journey. The children will follow a series of mini- lessons each day and at the end of each week they will complete a “Big Maths, Beat That!” Challenge. Each mini lesson follows the CLIC routine (or ACLIC for Little Big Maths). BIG MATHS HELPS TO CREATE NUMERATE CHILDREN

17 Big Maths beat that tests
Each Friday children from Yr 2-Yr 6 take part in the BIG MATHS BEAT THAT CHALLENGE! This comprises of 2 tests: A timed Learn-It’s Challenge An untimed CLIC challenge. Big Maths is a teaching programme used at Broughto help children to become numerate. Problem solving and word problems cannot be solved until children can manipulate and understand how numbers work. Big Maths lessons are fast, fun and furious.

19 EXAMPLE clic challenge

20 How they move up a clic / learn it
If a child achieves 10/10 on a CLIC Challenge 3 times they will move up to the next CLIC. If a child lands in the final column of the Learn It’s challenge 3 times, they will move up to the next step. For the Learn Its Challenge we expect the middle column to represent where the child is currently working and the final column to represent their next steps in learning.

21 How can you help your child at home
Ask your child’s teacher what CLIC they are working on. E.G. CLIC 4 – counting forwards and back to 100, doubles to 20, number bonds to 10, counting in 5s and 10s, adding and subtracting 2 1 digit numbers. Make maths a part of every day life in your house. Count things, play number games, download maths apps, add numbers on number plates, work out change…….the list is endless!
