19 WHAT IS A CURRICULUM VITAE?  not just a list of facts  a resume of your personal, educational and career history  an indication of your own strengths and achievements  when applying for a job, one way way of getting noticed among a number of other candidates

20 CURRICULUM VITAE – TIPS TO REMEMBER PRESENTATION  Always type your CV.  Use good quality paper (not a photocopy).  A photo may be relevant.  Include a COVERING LETTER, explaining why you’re applying for a job.  Don’t fax a CV. It’s a confidential document. CONTENT  Keep it short (one page if possible), simple and clear.  Organise it by using HEADINGS.  If applying for a job where your academic record is important, list qualifications and grades.  Start with your more recent job, and work backwards.

21  Don’t use too much work jargon, EXPLAIN ANY JOB TITLES that are ambiguous.  RESEARCH EMPLOYERS you intend to apply to – you can’t write an effective CV unless you know about the employer and the job.  Give most detail to skills, interests and activities that match their requirements.  Don’t include irrelevant details or failures.  Start with ‘STRONG VERBS’ (e.g. not ‘Spent the summer working...’ but ‘Worked...’)  Be SPECIFIC (i.e. avoid general phrases, such as ‘I’m an excellent team worker.’) and give examples.  Use REFEREES who can show that you possess the particular qualities required for the job or scholarship.  Check your spelling!

22 BETWEEN THE LINES  Don’t hide any vital information, like your age.  If you spent a year travelling or doing nothing, say so. Years on a CV that are anaccounted for will seem suspicious.  Don’t mention reasons for leaving your present job.  Never lie.  Don’t include your salary.  Focus on major achievements and demonstrate you are an asset to your present employer.  List a couple of outside interests and skills (languages), especially sports since they show potential for team work.  Keep a copy of your CV and look at it before the interview.
