1 University of Texas at El Paso Chapter 2011-2012 KICK-OFF MEETING SIGMA ALPHA LAMBDA NATIONAL LEADERSHIP & HONORS SOCIETY

2 SIGMA ALPHA LAMBDA WELCOMES ALL NEW & EXISTING MEMBERS TO THE 2011-2012 UTEP CHAPTER OF THE ORGANIZATION!!! Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national leadership and honors organization dedicated to developing the individual member and serving our campus and community. We encourage all members to visit salhonors.org website for more information and updates of our UTEP’s Chapter and activities throughout each semester!

4 ICEBREAKER ACTIVITY Please be sure to fill out the index cards provided with your contact information and provide your name, e-mail address, Date of Birth, and phone number.

5 UTEP SIGMA ALPHA LAMBDA- MEETINGS SAL Member meetings will be held 2 times each month. All meetings will be held in the UTEP Union building in the Acacia Room. 205 @ 5:30 Snacks & Drinks are provided at each meeting!!! FALL Meeting Dates: Sept. 7 th & 21 st Oct. 5 th & 19 th Nov. 2 nd, 16 th, & 30 th

6 OFFICER POSITIONS ARE STILL AVAILABLE!!! Vice-President: Academic Achievement- Create a comfortable means for students to seek academic assistance. Identify chapter members willing to participate as mentors in specific disciplines of study. Arrange study groups on campus throughout the academic year. Vice-President: Leadership Development- Identify leadership opportunities on campus and within the community; share them with members. Research leadership and other beneficial workshops (Ex: Resume-writing seminars, mock interviews, etc.) to help SAL members advance. Find business, community, or university leaders to speak at chapter meetings. Vice-President: Membership- Identify and attend all organization/membership recruitment fairs on campus. Ensure that all members present at chapter meetings and events sign the attendance record. Vice-President: Public Relations- Be responsible for promoting the organization within the chapter, the university, and the community. Keep Facebook and other social media up-to-date for all chapter events including meetings and service projects. Coordinate with the VP of Membership to be sure SAL is always represented correctly at organization fairs. Historian- Be responsible for the “Chapter Scrapbook”- an organized culmination of activity reports, university information, chapter constitution, photos, and consent forms. Print out and keep a copy of chapter activity reports for future leadership teams to access.

9 COMMUNITY SERVICE EVENTS Ronald McDonald House- 1 st community service event of the semester! We will cook a meal for the families living in the Ronald McDonald house. Donate Canned Goods- We will later be donating these items to a local organization as one of our service projects. SAL National Food Fight- SAL’s National Food Fight Against Hunger encourages all SAL chapters to become involved in activities to fight hunger in their community. Honor Cords- As your graduation draws near, graduation items including honor cords, tassels and embroidered honors stoles are available. Minimum of 20 hrs. volunteer service. Submit your ideas!!!

10 FUNDRAISING SAL T-Shirt Sales: Sold for 12$ each. We will also be selling SAL Shirts for $12 (Cash is preferred) which can be worn when we participate in service projects, general meetings etc. Partnering with an ice-cream shop, pizza place, sub shop for a % of sales??? Submit your ideas for fundraising to Robert or Diana!

11 UTEP SAL ACTIVITIES SAL Social “Meet the Chapter” Event Social event mandatory for all members to get to know each other! (Bowling, dinner, etc.) Any suggestions???

12 UTEP SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES SAL Scholarships - Scholarship application information will be emailed in the spring. There are opportunities for both continuing undergraduate students as well as students entering graduate school next year. Awards under consideration include: a.The Path to Excellence Award recognizes a select group of undergraduate members who have demonstrated outstanding achievement academically, exhibited outstanding leadership skills, or made a substantial contribution in the area of community service. b.The Emerging Leaders Scholarship is awarded to students who have maintained high academic performance, have made significant contributions to their chapter and their community, and have been accepted to an accredited Graduate Program of Study. c.The National Academic Achievement Award is awarded to one applicant chosen from all Path to Excellence and Emerging Leaders scholarship and award applications received, who has demonstrated an outstanding level of commitment and achievement throughout the most recent academic year.

13 UTEP SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES d.The New Member Award is given to members who have joined a Sigma Alpha Lambda Chapter during the previous calendar year. It recognizes their academic excellence as well as their significant contribution to the Chapter during their first year of membership. e.The Chapter Leadership Award is given to officers who have maintained high academic performance, demonstrated excellent leadership skills and have made a significant contribution to the operation of an existing chapter. 7. PVSA (President’s Volunteer Service Award): You can reference information about this on the website: www.salhonors.org under the “Partners” tab. It’s good to let members know they can sign up for this early since it covers a 12-month period of volunteering. It’s good for students/members of SAL who volunteer a lot with other organizations. If they plan to volunteer over 100 hours in once year, they should apply for this and can do so when the information is sent out by the SAL National Office in the fall to all members.
