Washington Irving published “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” in 1819 Part of a collection of stories titled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon. Also included the classic “Rip Van Winkle.” Irving is credited as the becoming the first great American writer Inspired by “folklore” WASHINGTON IRVING

Barely made it through school Named after George Washington Created the psudonym “Deidrich Knickerbocker” Tried working for his brother, but when that failed, wrote under a new psudonym “Geoffrey Crayon” Geoffrey Crayon is who Irving published “Sleepy Hollow” under Worked as an ambassedor and other public affairs, but spent a great deal of time in a large estate he called “Sunnyside” near Tarrytown Advocated for writer’s rights and their “living” Wrote a biography of George Washington WASHINGTON IRVING
