Overview ◦ The Business section of College and Career Awareness is 23 days long. ◦ Within the 5 different unit, there is enough material to cover about 35 days. ◦ You will have to pick and choose which assignments you would like to use within each section. ◦ You do not have to and will not have time to do ALL of these assignments. ◦ We are REQUIRED to follow the curriculum as given for this coming school year ◦ Small tweaks are allowed, but stick to the lesson plan and it’s spirit as closely as you can. ◦ In this section there are 7 assignments and 6 supplemental assignments. Choose what will work for you, but be sure to cover the key concepts and vocabulary as given in the lesson plan.
3
Assignment 1 – Career Connection ◦ Each section in Business has a “career connection” worksheet and activity that is a good “getting started” activity. ◦ This one helps kids recognize careers within the marketing and entrepreneur areas and what they make a year.
4
Assignment 2 – Introduction to Marketing ◦ This PowerPoint lecture and worksheet introduces the students to the basic concepts and vocabulary in Marketing.PowerPoint ◦ Product, Price, Promotion, Place ◦ Goods & Services ◦ Target Market ◦ Slogans, Logos, Jingles ◦ Distribution ◦ Distribution process ◦ Note: Personally, I like to combine this lesson with Lesson 6 on Marketing Strategies. They go nicely together. ◦ The PowerPoint I use to teach this is not included in your materials—it is also on my website, called “Assignment 2-Intro to Marketing”“Assignment 2-Intro to Marketing”
5
Assignment 3 – The Four P’s ◦ Play the Four Corners game with the four P’s. ◦ Students complete accompanying worksheet for the vocabulary
6
Assignment 4 – Product Assignment ◦ Students will label different product types ◦ Create labels with “goods”, “services” and “ideas” on the board. ◦ Give out the pictures, laminated or in button form, to each student. ◦ Have them place it on the board under the correct label.
7
Assignment 5a – Entrepreneur Lecture ◦ Give the lecture about entrepreneurship by using the provided PowerPoint. Students will fill out the accompanying worksheet.
8
Assignment 5b – Types of Entrepreneurs ◦ Give the lecture about entrepreneurship by using the provided PowerPoint. Students will fill out the accompanying worksheet.
9
Assignment 5c – Shark Tank ◦ Watch two segments from the reality TV show, Shark Tank ◦ You can buy episodes on Amazon ◦ You can watch them for free on Youtube ◦ I have purchased all six seasons! ◦ Students watch the show and fill out the worksheet. ◦ They then look up the company online to determine how the company is currently doing. ◦ I will try to add my excel sheet with my notes for all the episodes on the website within the next few weeks!
10
Assignment 6 – Commercial Strategies ◦ This video is not available on the State website, due to copyright restrictions! This video ◦ You can find your own commercials or ◦ You can get the video on my website: ◦ Meganreescurriculum.weebly.com ◦ Freebies>College & Career Awareness ◦ I will update it occasionally so check back if you can. ◦ Students will identify 12 marketing strategies in commercials: ◦ Bandwagon, Beautiful People, Card Stacking, Common Man, Emotional Appeal, Glittering Generalities, Name Calling, Repetition, Stretch the Truth, Statistics, Testimonial, and Transfer ◦ I also have a PowerPoint that explains these strategies that you a may want to use before the video—it’s not part of the official lesson, but it is quite helpful and also on my website. Assignment 7 – Small Business Assignment ◦ This hands-on project is meant to be the final of the entire unit. In this assignment, students will be put into groups and will use what they have learned to create small business. There are several options for the medium they will use—you can have each group choose, they can all do the same one, or they can do all three or a combination of the three. ◦ Make a Poster ◦ Make a PowerPoint ◦ Make a Commercial

Additional Resources (optional) Finance in the Classroom Marketing Crossword Marketing Word Search Marketing Trivia PBS Kids Marketing Marketing Strategies Magazine Ad These resources are optional to flesh out your Marketing section. You will not be able to all of them—or even any of them—but they are there for you if you want them!
14
Finance in the Classroom ◦ This file is in the resource file but it’s called Classroom Search, not Finance in the Classroom. ◦ Go to Financeintheclassroom.org. ◦ In the search box, type “Entrepreneur.” ◦ Click on the first item to come up: Entrepreneurship Lesson Plans. ◦ The lesson plans basically have you give the kids a survey, and then they choose an entrepreneur and do an oral report about them.
15
Marketing Crossword ◦ Yay! A crossword! So exciting!
16
Marketing Word Search ◦ Yea! A word search! Double exciting!
17
Marketing Trivia ◦ This file is not included in the resource file, but is available on my website. I will keep it updated— usually every quarter I update it and put it up on the site. This file my website ◦ This is a game I created to test my kids’ knowledge of Marketing! The kids LOVE this game, and it can take a whole period, or about 30 minutes. I usually do it the day of the Auction to get them some extra money. ◦ I put students in pairs, and they choose a category. If either of them gets the right answer, they BOTH get paid. If they don’t know, I open it to the rest of them and they can answer out of turn when I call on them. In this case, only one person gets paid.
18
PBS Kids Marketing ◦ I had personally never heard of this site, but many teachers say it is really awesome! There is a file included in the resource file that gives you full directions on how to operate the website. ◦ pbskids.org/dontbuyit pbskids.org/dontbuyit

Marketing Strategies ◦ The worksheet for this is included in your Resource File, and it is a homework assignment. Students watch TV (or Youtube) and write down the logo, slogan, jingle, and marketing strategy for each commercial. ◦ The PowerPoint I use for this is not included with your materials, but it seems pretty difficult to give this homework unless you have introduced the 12 styles. The video in lesson 6 shows an example of each, but I like to introduce them and talk about them before I show that video. So I combine this assignment with Lesson 6, and attach the marketing strategies video right on the end.PowerPoint

Magazine Ad ◦ In this assignments, students draw or create on the computer a Magazine ad. ◦ I also have a resource on my website for this one that is a little more advanced. I do a similar assignment where students draw a popsicle stick that has a different target market on it.on my website
