Election of 1844 Polk’s campaign slogan – “Fifty-four forty or fight!” Take over all of Oregon as the U.S. spreads west James K. Polk’s platform was the expand our borders to the Pacific Ocean

Expanding West Reasons Reasons : farm & ranch To farm & ranch where land was plentiful Land speculators Land speculators bought huge plots to make aprofit Broke it down and sold it in small parts to make a large profit escape debt or legal problems Find jobs or escape debt or legal problems Find gold Find gold and become rich Mountain men were from many different backgrounds They explored, found new trails, shared their knowledge of the land

Santa Fe Santa Fe Trail Used to connect Missouri with the New Mexico Territory Used to connect Missouri with the New Mexico Territory traders could get rich New Mexico seen as a place where traders could get rich Founder of the trail came back to MO with bags of gold & silver

Territory of Florida Gains Statehood Cotton Cotton & tobacco plantations plantations in the North and small farms & cattle ranches in central Florida Created a state constitution which included slavery & public schools & petitioned to be a state Granted state statehood after 6 years when Iowa entered as a free state Maintain the balance between free and slave states 27 th State on March 3, 1845
