Writing a Conclusion Paragraph
2
Structure A conclusion paragraph in 8 th grade can have 3-5 sentences What to write? By the time most people write their last paragraph they run out of steam.
3
A strong conclusion is just as important as a strong introduction! Think of writing an essay as a first meeting with a new friend: You want to make a good first impression and leave your new friend anticipating another meeting with you- or in this case, wanting to read another essay written by you.
4
The concluding paragraph typically has two parts: 1. The summary statement is one or two sentences which restate the thesis in a fresh way to reinforce the essay's main idea. 2. The clincher is a final thought which should create a lasting impression on the reader.
5
Summary Statement The summary statement is an effective way to start your concluding paragraph because it helps to drive home the ideas you've expressed in your essay. Example: If you love beautiful surroundings, world class theater and art, and an exquisite meal, then San Francisco is the place for you.
6
Clincher The clincher, also referred to as the closer, is your last opportunity to connect with the reader. One way to make the most of this moment is to return to the technique you used for your hook.
7
Example: Summary Statement- Nothing can compare to a dog’s dedication, intelligence, and friendship. Clincher- Because a dog offers all these wonderful qualities, and more, I realize once again why people say that, “A dog is man’s best friend.” I would feel fortunate to have a dog as an animal companion.
8
What is a conclusion? A conclusion is what you will leave with your reader It "wraps up" your essay It demonstrates to the reader that you accomplished what you set out to do It shows how you have proved your thesis It provides the reader with a sense of closure on the topic
9
Structure A conclusion is the opposite of the introduction Remember that the introduction begins general and ends specific The conclusion begins specific and moves to the general
10
What to include Your conclusion wraps up your essay in a tidy package and brings it home for your reader Your topic sentence should summarize what you said in your thesis statement ◦This suggests to your reader that you have accomplished what you set out to accomplish Do not simply restate your thesis statement, as that would be redundant ◦Rephrase the thesis statement with fresh and deeper understanding
11
What to include Your conclusion is no place to bring up new ideas Your supporting sentences should summarize what you have already said in the body of your essay ◦If a brilliant idea tries to sneak into the final paragraph, you must pluck it out and let it have its own paragraph in the body, or leave it out completely our topic for each body paragraph should be summarized in the conclusion ◦Wrap up the main points
12
◦Your closing sentence should help the reader feel a sense of closure ◦Your closing sentence is your last word on the subject; it is your "clincher" ◦Demonstrate the importance of your ideas ◦Propel your reader to a new view of the subject ◦End on a positive note Your closing sentence should make your readers glad they read your paper
13
Strategies for an effective Conclusion- Play the “So What” Game ◦When you read a statement from the conclusion, ask yourself, "So what?" or "Why should anybody care?“ ◦Ponder that question and answer it Basically, I’m just saying that education was important to Douglass So what? Well, it was important because it was a key to him feeling like a free and equal citizen Why should anybody care? That’s important because plantation owners tried to keep slaves from being educated so that they could maintain control. When Douglass obtained an education, he undermined that control personally.
14
Strategies for an effective conclusion Return to the theme or themes in the introduction ◦This brings the reader full circle ◦If you begin by describing a scenario, you can end with the same scenario as proof that your essay is helpful in creating a new understanding ◦Refer to the introductory paragraph by using key words, or parallel concepts and images that you also used in the introduction
15
Strategies for an effective conclusion Summarize ◦Include a brief summary of the paper’s main points, but don’t simply repeat things that were in the paper
16
Strategies for an effective Conclusion Pull it all together ◦Show your reader how the points you made and the support and examples you used fit together Include an insight or quotation from the research or reading you did for the paper Propose a course of action, a solution to an issue, or questions for further study
17
Concluding Strategies that do not Work Beginning with an unnecessary, overused phrase These may work in speeches, but they come across as wooden and trite in writing ◦"in conclusion" ◦"in summary" ◦"in closing" ◦"as shown in the essay“ Introducing a new idea or subtopic in your conclusion
18
Conclusion Strategies that do not work Making sentimental, emotional appeals that are out of character with the rest of the paper Including evidence (quotations, statistics, etc.) that should be in the body of the paper
19
THE CONCLUSION Just as every essay has a clear beginning, it should have a clear ending. The last paragraph, also know as the conclusion, should make your essay sound finished.

Introduction- In Lake Wobegone Days, humorist Garrison Keillor tells of a retired dentist in a little Minnesota town. He sits in a fishing boat much of the day. "Open wide," Dr. Nute says to the fish. "This may sting a little bit. Okay. Now bite down." Unfortunately, not all retired persons are so easily able to continue their once interesting professions in some form, as Dr. Nute has. Retirees have a high death rate within the first six months after retirement, apparently because of boredom, and psychologists suggest three ways to prevent it.

Conclusion Concluding Paragraphs Intro duct ory Para grap hs In Lake Wob egon e Day s, hum orist Garr ison Keill or tells of a retir ed denti st in a little Min neso ta town. He sits in a fishi ng boat muc h of thed ay. "Op en wide," Dr. Nute says to the fish. "Thi s may sting a little bit. Oka y. N ow bite dow n." Unfo rtun ately, not all retir ed pers ons are so easil y able to conti nue their once inter estin g prof essi ons in som e form, as Dr. Nute has. Reti rees have a high deat h rate withi n the first six mon ths after retir eme nt, appa rentl y beca use of bore dom, and psyc holo gists sugg est thre e way s to prev ent it.

Introduction Introduction- When Jonathan Swift described Gulliver's trip to the land of Laputa in Gulliver's Travels, Swift depicted scientists who had one eye turned inward and the other aimed at the stars. In the case of two high school science teachers I had had at this school, life imitates Swift's art. The school district should require all teachers, especially those in science, to have an interest in students as well as expertise and curiosity.
23
Summary Statement- It is not too much to ask teachers to be dedicated to their fields of study and to be willing to share their enthusiasm with their students. Clincher- In order to be effective, teachers should have their eyes focused on their students in their classes and always be searching for ways to bring the curriculum to life.
