.

960H Resolution CCTV record resolution is one of the most crucial elements to capturing quality images… …that can later be used for identification and possible legal action.

960H Resolution How often have we seen video playback on the local news of a recorded crime only to realize that the quality of the video is so poor that using it to capture and prosecute is futile..

960H Resolution Most DVR recorders are limited to 3 global record resolution settings. They are: CIF 352x240 ½ D1 (2 CIF) 720x240 D1 (4 CIF) 720x480.

DVR Record Resolutions When comparing resolutions the first number represents horizontal lines and the second number represents vertical lines CIF – CIF is the entry level resolution setting on most analog DVR’s 352x240 2 CIF – ½ D1 is the middle resolution setting on most analog DVR’s720x240 D1 – D1 is the highest resolution setting on most analog DVR’s720x480 240 vertical lines 352 horizontal lines

Comparing Record Resolutions There is a direct relationship between recorded video quality and recorded resolution Resolution setting at time of recording is very important, because once recorded you do not have the ability to increase resolution Why might you want to record at different resolutions is dictated by the type of image you are looking to capture.

Comparing Record Resolutions Recording at different resolutions examples CIF – overall view such as buses in a parking lot 2 CIF- defined view such as retail sales floor activity D1- max defined view such as facial recognition, cash transactions, etc…

DVR Record Resolutions With CCTV there has always been a game of catch up between camera resolution and record quality Camera’s TVL resolution has exceeded record capability When recording at CIF, 2 CIF or D1 the full potential of your cameras TVL resolution is not achieved

960H Resolution What is TVL Lines? Television lines (TVL) is a specification of an analog camera's horizontal resolution power. It is alternatively known as Lines of Horizontal Resolution (LoHR).The TVL is one of the most important resolution measures in a video system.

960H Resolution Introducing 960H Resolution – 960H Resolution is 960x480 – 960H Resolution provides a 30% increase in horizontal resolution compared to D1

960H Resolution The full potential of your cameras performance resolution is now achieved 960H resolution now enables the recorder to capture resolutions of up to 700TVL The benefit of 960H is in playback quality of recorded video

960H Resolution Record resolution choices are now 960H 960x480 D1 (4 CIF) 720x480 ½ D1 (2 CIF) 720x240 CIF 352x240

Comparing Record Resolutions CIF 352x240 * Not drawn to scale. CIF- 352x240 is the lowest record resolution on most DVR’s, CIF will allow for the longest record period at the lowest record quality. CIF Max TVL camera resolution is approx. 265 lines. Example of where to record at CIF - When the end user is interested in overall observation and not specific identification

Comparing Record Resolutions 2 CIF 720 x 240 * Not drawn to scale. 2 CIF- 720x240 allows for twice the horizontal resolution as CIF. Recording at 2 CIF will require more storage that CIF and uses a max TVL camera resolution of approx 540 lines. Example of where to record at 2CIF- retail sales floor traffic

Comparing Record Resolutions D1 720 x 480 * Not drawn to scale. D1- 720x480 until recently D1 was the maximum record resolution. D1 is four times more resolution than CIF and twice the vertical resolution of 2 CIF. D1 requires more storage that CIF and 2 CIF and uses a max TVL camera resolution of approx. 540 lines. Example of when D1 would be used for recording cash transactions, positive identification.

Comparing Record Resolutions 960H 960 x 480 * Not drawn to scale. 960H- Offers 30% more horizontal resolution than D1and will use a max camera TVL of 720 lines of resolution Example of when to use 960H- When the application requires the best possible image that an analog solution can provide.

Calculating Captured Record Resolution In order to calculate the captured record resolution you simply take ¾ of your horizontal resolution setting Example: – CIF 352x240 (352 x.75 = 264) Total Captured Record resolution is 264 TVL – 2 CIF 720x240 (720x.75=540) Total Captured Record resolution is 540TVL – D1 4CIF 720x480 (720x.75=540) Total Captured Record resolution is 540TVL – 960H 960x480 (960 x.75=720) Total Captured Record resolution is 720TVL

Comparing Record Resolutions CIF 352x240 2 CIF 720 x 240 D1 720 x 480 960H 960 x 480 D1 720 x 480 960H offers a 30% increase in horizontal resolution vs. D1 D1 960H +30% * Not drawn to scale.

Choose Your Resolution – CIF 352x240 – For recording the longest amount of time – ½ D1 (2 CIF) 720x240- For twice the performance resolution quality as CIF – D1 (4 CIF) 720x480 –Best record quality prior to the release of 960H, four times the performance as CIF – 960H 960x480- For recording at the best possible resolution over coax cable while supporting cameras up to 700TVL, 960H is a 30% increase in horizontal performance vs. D1

960H Resolution To achieve the best possible viewed Image with a 960H recorder A monitor with A HDMI input is necessary Connect a HDMI HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) cable from the recorders output to the HDMI monitor input

960H Resolution Monitor Choosing a monitor for a 960H DVR – HDMI input – A 16:9 aspect ratio (widescreen) – 1920 x 1080 resolution

4:3 vs 16:9 16:9 aspect ratio provides up to 33% more useable detail. 4:3 16:9

Choose Your Record Quality Within most recorders settings in addition to resolution are record quality choices – Level 1 (low) – Level 2 – Level 3 – Level 4 – Level 5 (high)

Choose Your Record Quality By recording at the highest record quality within a resolution you will receive the best quality video within that resolution setting Example- – If you were to record at 960H resolution at record quality 5 (highest) you would receive the best possible recorded video – If you were to record at CIF resolution at record quality 1 (lowest) you would receive the lowest possible recorded video

Choose Your Record PPS Today’s recorders have the option to record at many different frame rate settings When choosing a frame rate you must consider what is it that you are trying to view on playback Typically frames can be set anywhere from 1 to 30 PPS 30PPS is often called real time

Choose Your Record PPS Years ago 1PPS per camera was acceptable Standard recorder technology frame rates of up to 30PPS are achievable, this is done by lowering record resolution to CIF The question was always how do you record, do you want many images at a low resolution or few images at a high resolution

Choose Your Record PPS Today with 960H recorders you have the ability to record at 960x480 (30% more horizontal resolution than D1) and not sacrifice PPS – With a 960H recorder recording at 960x480 at 30PPS per camera for 16 cameras is not an issue

960H Resolution When recording with 960H resolution you immediately receive a camera’s full resolution 960H will support up to 700TVL so it is ideal for any existing video system upgrade Example- If there was a video system recording at D1 using cameras with 650TVL the TVL being recorded would be approx. 570. Now place a 960H DVR in the same scenario and the cameras full 650TVL will be recorded.

960H Storage Requirements When recording at 960H resolution storage requirements change slightly compared to D1 – Example- 16 Channel 960H- 16 Camera’s a 5pps with a 1TB Hard Drive recording at quality 5, 7.5 days storage D1- 16 Camera’s a 5pps with a 1TB Hard Drive recording at quality 5, 8.7 days storage 960H requires approx. 15% more storage when directly compared to D1

Choosing The Proper Camera When considering cameras for a new install there a couple of points to keep in mind – Camera TVL resolution – Camera LUX setting – Camera Lens Choices – Camera Housing/Design

Choosing The Proper Camera Camera TVL resolution- as stated earlier now with the availability of 960H DVR recorders camera resolution is now more important than ever.

Camera TVL resolution When choosing a camera you want the camera TVL resolution to match the record resolution A DVR recording at 960H can support a 700 TVL line camera

Camera LUX setting A cameras LUX setting refers to how a camera can handle a dark scenario, the lower the LUX setting the better a camera can see in low light, a LUX of zero means that a camera can see in the dark.

Camera LUX setting Choosing a cameras proper lighting setting can mean the difference between no image, a B&W image or color by day color by very low light image at night. IR Camera Intensifier Camera Color by Day Color By Night.00002 Low LUX

Camera Lens Choices Choosing the proper lens is critical to capturing the image desired A varifocal lens gives the installing technician the ability to adjust the cameras field of view based on its environment
