10.6 solving quadratic equations by factoring Solve x 2 + 2x – 3 using the quadratic formula X = 1 & -3 Now, factor the same equation (x + 3)(x – 1) Set each factor equal to zero & solve for x X + 3 = 0 X – 1 = 0 X = -3 & 1 What do you notice?

Factoring helps you solve a quadratic equation without using the quadratic formula. Remember: solving a quadratic equation means finding it’s x-intercepts
3
To solve a quadratic equation by factoring 1.Factor the equation into 2 binomials (check to make sure you are correct.) 2.Set each binomial equal to zero & solve for “x” in each binomial. 3.The answer(s) are your x-intercepts. Important note: When solving by factoring, the equation must be equal to zero. If it isn’t, use your math skills to make it equal to zero.
4
Solve by factoring X 2 + 11x + 30 = 0 (x + 5) (x + 6) X + 5 = 0 X + 6 = 0 X = -5 & -6
5
Try these 1.X 2 – x – 12 = 0 2.3x 2 + 5x – 12 = 0 3.X 2 – 6x + 11 = 2 Answers: 1.X = -3 & 4 2.X = 4/3 & -3 3.X = 3
