Chapter 5: Polynomials Section 5-1: Monomial Operations 1. Monomial: a number, variable, or product of one or more numbers and variables. Examples: -5, x, 2xy, x 3 yz 4 2.Polynomial: the sum or difference of monomials. Examples: x 2 + 3y is a binomial 7xy + 4z – 8 is a trinomial 5x + 7y – 4z 5 + 9 is a four term polynomial …… and so on 3. When Multiplying powers of the same base, ADD EXPONENTS. Examples: x 4 (x 3 ) = x 7 5x 2 (6x) = 30x 3

4. When Dividing powers of the same base, SUBTRACT EXPONENTS. Examples: 5. When Raising a Power to another Power you must MULTIPLY EXPONENTS. Also remember: If there is a coefficient inside the parentheses, you must raise that coefficient to the power as well. Examples: (x 5 ) 6 = x 30 (3x 5 y) 3 = 27x 15 y 3

6.When raising a Quotient to a Power you must raise BOTH the numerator and denominator to that power. Example: 7. Any nonzero number raised to the Power of Zero is one. Examples: 3 0 = 1 (xy 2 ) 0 = 1 8.You can turn a Negative Exponent positive by flipping the term to the other side of a fraction. Examples:
