KS3 Tenses Revision PP1

By the end of year 9 you should know 4 tenses in French These are:- The Present The Immediate Future The Past Perfect The Past Imperfect

The Present English has 2 present tenses and French only one. This makes it easy for us to learn French and much harder for French people to learn English as they have to work our which of our two tenses to use each time. I play and I am playing are both present tenses of ‘to play’ in English. BOTH are translated by the same French - Je joue

More examples of the Present tense in English I am We want I eat She has I can They work Do you like…? He prefers… I must… I am eating We are listening He’s watching We’re working I’m drinking Are you coming? Is she going out? It’s snowing I’m concentrating

The Immediate Future This works exactly the same way in both languages and is a straight forward translation Present tense of ‘to go’ + infinitive of main verb Eg I’m going to workje vais travailler He’s going to eatil va manger We’re going to playnous allons jouer

Some more examples… I’m going to go out He’s going to leave We’re going to watch They’re going to play Are you going to listen? Is he going to come? I’m going to work She’s going to be….

The Past Perfect This is where it starts to get tricky. By the end of year 9 you should know 2 past tenses – one of them ( the Perfect) you should know really well. Again, like the present tense, this one French tense translates TWO French tenses –I played AND I have played- J’ai joué –I ate AND I have eaten - J’ai mangé

Some more examples I played He wanted We went She had They liked I bought We hid Did you work? I drank He has played We’ve wanted They’ve gone She has had They’ve liked Have you bought? We’ve hidden Have you worked? I’ve drunk

The Past Imperfect This is another past tense that translates was / were or used to Both ideas are translated by one tense in French – the Imperfect. Thus I used to play and I was playing Both become the same in French Je jouais

Some more examples I used to be I was waiting We used to have They were travelling They used to play We used to drink Were you listening? Did you use to live… He used to want… I was watching

To sum up… Present – I play or I am playing Immediate Future – I’m going to play Past Perfect - I played or I’ve played Past Imperfect – I used to play or I was playing
