1 7 th Grade World History Liberty Middle School – EDI 2014-15 1 LO: We will define the term “legacy” and describe the legacy of Rome. APK: Pair-Share: What traits 1 do you think you have from your parents? Describe them. (eyes, nose, hair etc.?) Connect APK to LO: Just as a parent can pass down traits to their children, so can the civilizations of the past pass down characteristics to our world. 1 trait: a part, characteristic, or feature that makes something recognizable.

2 7 th Grade World History Liberty Middle School – EDI 2014-15 2 Concept Development: A legacy is something that is passed on to future generations. The Romans left many different legacies to us today. We have inherited 2 many ideas and things from the Romans. 2 inherit: to receive something after someone dies Before we continue, let’s briefly discuss how I want you to take notes in history class this year.

3  Start by drawing a vertical line under the objective.  All words that are underlined yellow go on the left side of the line. (Your ELA class might call these main ideas, “stars”.)  All words that are underlined red go on the right. (Your ELA class might call these supporting details/evidence, “bars.”) Main ideas (subject) Supporting details (information) Today, use this format for copying the notes. Later on, we will work on identifying the main ideas and supporting details that we read. (Your ELA classes may also have you use this format to organize your thoughts for writing.)

4 7 th Grade World History Liberty Middle School – EDI 2014-15 Concept Development: A legacy is something that is passed on to future generations. The Romans left many different legacies to us today. We have inherited 2 many ideas and things from the Romans. Some of the legacies of Rome include: 2 inherit: to receive something after someone dies Main ideas (subje ct) Supporting details (information) Art Architecture and Engineering Writing and Language Government Law Statues, paintings and other types of art we have today are similar to Rome. Many of our buildings, roads and bridges, stadiums, and waterways are modeled after Rome. Rome’s language, Latin, gives us many word parts today in English. Rome also gave us Roman numerals. (I, II, III, IV, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X) We copied some of our early government from Rome’s early republic. (Example, senators) We base some of our laws off of old Roman ideas, like “innocent until proven guilty.”

Your teacher will show Roman images on the screen. 2. With your partner, decide which “modern” image best matches the image on the screen. 3. Pair-share how the image shows Rome’s legacy to us today.
