Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery in India
2
Deep Brain Stimulation can help to treat with many symptoms caused by the following movement disorders: Parkinson’s disease: tremor, rigidity, and slowness of movement caused by the death of dopamine-producing nerve cells responsible for relaying messages that control body movement. Essential tremor: involuntary rhythmic tremors of the hands and arms, occurring both at rest and during purposeful movement. Also may affect the head in a "no- no" motion. Dystonia: involuntary movements and prolonged muscle contraction, resulting in twisting or writhing body motions, tremor, and abnormal posture. May involve the entire body, or only an isolated area. Spasms can often be suppressed by "sensory tricks," such as touching the face, eyebrows, or hands.

How is the Surgery Performed? The surgery can be performed in the sleep mode and in the awake mode. 1.Awake Micro electrode guided DBS A small opening is made in the skull after the area is anesthetized. A frame is attached to the skull and imaging study is done and targets are identified. After that, the microelectrode is inserted and is tested for 20 minutes. 2. Sleep mode Interventional MRI guided The electrodes are inserted in the sleep mode and the patient is generally asleep in an MRI scanner. The patient undergoes this procedure without having a frame placed on their heads.

Being awake during a brain surgery procedure is troublesome for some patients. Hence the sleep mode interventional MRI guided surgery is becoming more and more popular these days. The MRI method helps accurately identify the targets and guide the electrodes to the right location in the brain. Overall Deep brain stimulation surgery is considered as a good corrective action for those with movement disorders and can greatly improve the quality of life for such patients.
