Computer Software A software program is:
A series of instructions that tells the computer what to do

Computer Software A graphical user interface (GUI)
Allows you to interact with the software using graphics and icons (small images) Controls how you enter data and how the screen displays information

Computer Software System software are a group of software programs
Systems software programs control the operations of the computer and its devices Operating System (OS) is a set of programs that coordinates all activities among computer hardware devices and allows users to run application software Two types of System Software Programs: OS & Utility Software/Programs Utility Programs allow the user to perform maintenance-type tasks usually related to managing a computer, its devices or its programs

Developing Computer Literacy
You will notice that all the Microsoft applications have similar toolbars and menus. Knowledge of how these function and the ability to use this knowledge in various applications is part of what constitutes computer literacy This knowledge can also be used in other non-Microsoft applications because applications generally have functionally similar GUI (graphic user interface) Xerox developed the first GUI, Macintosh adapted it for their first GUI around 1984 Microsoft adopted a similar interface when they developed Windows. Xerox unsuccessfully sued Macintosh for breach of copyright and/or patent but it was decided that the GUI design was covered by neither set of laws. The end user wins in terms of ease of use for application software.

Place CD in CD Drive Office CD will be detected and start installation process Select type of installation required Typical: Simplest option installs most but not all components; may not copy clipart to hard disk Custom: Allows user to choose what they will install, Choose ‘Select all options’ to install all components Complete: Installs all components from Office CD including ClipArt and other Samples Features not installed initially can be installed later if required.
