Our department of Accounting and Finance was ranked 3rd in the UK by both The Independent University rankings 2010, and The Times Good University Guide 2010. 8 Entrepreneurship research case Role of Gender in Business Financing ESRC-funded research Why do women use less finance than men when starting a business? –Demand side (entrepreneurs) –Supply side (bank loan officers) Impact on banking practice and government policy Bank lending criteria and processes inadvertently impact on lending into women-owned firms UK Government £12m capital fund for women introduced in 2009

9 Marketing research case Customer Equity Drivers of Future Sales: This study investigates the relationship between customer attitudes and future purchase behaviour (i.e. sales) Key findings: Customer equity drivers predict future behaviour and help to direct resource investments. However, costs of managing the loyalty scheme may outweigh gains from better understanding customer behaviour. Key implication: loyalty schemes only pay off if data/information acquired is used to improve customer equity drivers. If not, it is a waste of company resources! Practical impact: research findings lead a major European retailer to leave their loyalty scheme

11 Management Science Risk case Investigate the capacity and condition of the main cable anchorages of the Forth Road Bridge –Estimating uncertainty under different numbers of possible test samples –Explore pre-posterior probabilities under different possible future scenarios Use expert judgement to qualitatively structure model and populate with probabilities Use probabilistic model to compare efficacy of different tests and compare different sample sizes within these tests Once test data becomes available, update model to assess the capacity/condition of the bridge

12 Accounting & Finance research case Report on the ICL/Stockline disaster – the worst mainland health and safety incident in Scotland for 50 years – produced by a multi-disciplinary team of academics and experts. Referenced by the subsequent Public Inquiry and formed the basis for a new stream of academic publications

13 On 11 May 2004, nine workers were killed and more than thirty-three injured ICL situated less than two miles for Strathclyde university On August 17th 2007, the operators of ICL Tech Ltd and ICL Plastics Ltd pled guilty to four health and safety charges which had led to the deaths and injuries. Forensic accounting showed that the company had large cash holdings (30th November 2003 £897,51; 30th November 2004 £455,187; 30th November 2005 £749,950). Yet the company was fined in total £400,000 The report brought important information which would otherwise have been uncovered into the public domain.The point of the research was to enable policy changes to be made to prevent the reoccurrence of other similar disasters.

15 Research students Currently more than 160 postgraduate research students Students originate 40% UK, 20% EU and 40% outside EU PGR student research training carried out in cross-faculty Research Methods course All students work towards Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods. Course specially designed to highlight diversity of research methodologies and philosophies used in Business Possible to take MRes in Research Methods, degree recognized by the Economic and Social Science Research Council.
