Good Morning! As you come in, sit next to your partners as listed below: PERIOD 5 Sam & Chase Lea & Kyle Jacob & Josh Ian & Evgeny & Calvin Arianna & Patrick & Salem Gabbi & Anthony & Dylan PERIOD 6 Tristan & Zander & Remmy Christian & Zach & Kevin R. Aldair & Nicko Jackson & August Kevin S. & Olivia & Anna Amber & Eli & Leisha

Soil Type and Biodiversity  Take out your “Soil Types” web map (pink)  You will be given a set of 21 plants.  With your partner(s) you will determine which plant grows in which of the 5 types of soil  HINT: Peaty – 4Sandy – 2 Silty – 3Clay – 3

 Which soil type has the highest biodiversity? Soil Type and Biodiversity

Comparing Growing Methods  Which soil type has the biggest influence on plant growth?

Your Job  You will be growing plants in small containers using different soils to determine which soil affects plant growth the most.  You and your partner are going to design your own experiment

Do you remember the steps to the scientific method?

STEP 1: Ask a Question How does soil type affect the growth of plants? Everyone, get a laptop!

STEP 3: Hypothesis VARIABLES  Choose 1 plant, from the options below, that you want to experiment with ( control variable #1 )

Sign up for the plant that you want to grow on the whiteboard. STEP 3: Hypothesis

VARIABLES  Choose 3 different soils, from the options below, that you want to experiment with ( manipulated variable ).

STEP 2: Background Research use these links to help you answer the research questions Growing Plants  http://bonnieplants.com/library/caring-for-vegetables-in-pots/  http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-care-for-containergrown- vegetables-and-flow.html  http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/the-essentials-of-container- gardening.html  https://extension.umd.edu/growit/food-gardening-101/planting-and-caring- container-vegetables Types of Soils  http://agverra.com/blog/soil-types/  http://www.almanac.com/plants/soil/Loamy  http://www.thompson-morgan.com/plants-for-soil-types Types of Plants  http://www.bhg.com/gardening/vegetable/vegetables/growing-vegetables- in-containers/  http://www.container-gardening-for-food.com/Growing-vegetables-in- containers.html

Determine your VARIABLES 1. Independent (manipulated) 2. Dependent (responding) 3. Controls (need to have 3) 3) hypothesis STEP 3: Hypothesis

 If a __________________ is grown in ____________________ soil then it will grow _______________ than _____________ because __________________________.  If a ___(type of plant)____ __ is grown in ___(type of soil)__ soil then it will grow __(how it will grow)___ than ___(the other treatments)_ because ___(reason based on your research)__. STEP 3: Hypothesis

EAMPLE DATA TABLE DATA TABLE EXAMPLES:

DATA TABLE  What type of data are you going to collect?  On a separate piece of paper, make an outline of your data table.  What you need to include: 1. Title (includes MV & RV) 2. Labels for rows (MV) & columns (RV) 3. Multiple pieces of data 4. Units on data 5. Observations section

Next class  Next class you will set up your experiment and begin collecting data  Data will be collected over 2 weeks. STEP 4: Experiment
