So What is the U.S. doing? We know what Theodore Roosevelt would be doing!! Woodrow Wilson was elected president in 1913. He DID NOT want the United States to be part of this war!! People in America were taking sides (remember we have a lot of immigrants from Europe).

Then something bad happens… On May 7,1915 Germany, using one of it’s newly invented submarine, blew up the British passenger ship, Lusitania, killing over 1200 people including 128 Americans! We are DEFINITELY going to war! Right? Wrong! Germany promised not to attack any more passenger ships and America stayed out of the war. Wilson is reelected with the slogan, “He kept us out of war!”

Germany Continues On Germany liked the fact that the U.S. was staying neutral. Germany sent notice to the world that they would sink ANY ship, even if it was a passenger ship. Germany knew this would upset the U.S. Germany did not want Britain getting any help – even from the U.S.

Germany They knew that the threat of blowing up ships would most likely pull the U.S. into war, so they wanted help. The sent a famous letter known as the Zimmermann Telegram. Zimmermann Telegram Zimmermann Telegram In this message sent by Germany to Mexico, they asked Mexico to attack the U.S. if we joined the war.

In return for helping, Mexico would receive the land that they lost to the U.S. during the Mexican-American war (Texas, New Mexico, Arizona). This message was sent in code (look at textbook page 231). Britain intercepted the letter and presented the information to the U.S.

In 1917, Germany sank five U.S. merchant ships. President Wilson believed that it was time for the U.S. to join the war. Congress declared war on April 6, 1917.
