Think-Pair-Share What are some traits would humans try to select in dogs? Remember: All dogs breeds are the same species: Canis familiaris (so can interbreed and produce viable offspring) There are over 400 different breeds of dogs A breed is a subspecies It takes many generations to get a new breed Many of today’s breeds are a result of artificial selection/selective breeding
5
What if… You want a dog that can hear a polar bear approaching and alarm the bear so that it will turn back. Which of the following dogs would you selectively breed to produce offspring that would be most effective in scaring away a polar bear?
6
Dog Traits Physical traits Function/significance 1) Smell Above average olfactory receptors = 2) Sight Above average number of rods = 3) Hearing Long pointed ears = 4) Speed Long legs = 5) Endurance Large heart = 6) Strength Large muscles = 7) Coat color 8) Hair length long hair = short hair = Strong smeller Excellent eyesight Very good hearing More oxygen = very good endurance Very strong Fast runner Keep dog warm; gets heavy when wet Keep dog cool; does not get heavy when wet

Dog Traits Behavioral traits Trainability High trainability = Low trainability = Disposition Vicious = Compatible = Bark Loud bark = Quiet bark = learns quickly; follows directions; does not get distracted easily distracted; have to keep on a leash most times; crazy will attack if commanded; is not afraid of other dogs or people friendly; likes to help others; very social can be used as a warning won’t scare others
