Introduction Although each role has specific duties, each committee member always fills in and helps out others... It’s all about the team work! General expectations – Attend LUSUMA events – Introweek/Outroweek organisation – Attend LUSUMA meetings – Assist in socials on the night

LUSUMA is time consuming and will require a lot of extra effort and time management Both the medical school and LUSUMA recommend that if you are in the qualifiers or feel you are struggling academically, that you do not apply for the LUSUMA committee. It will put a lot of extra demands on you.

President Must have a year’s experience on LUSUMA Chairs all meetings Is responsible overall for LUSUMA activities and members Communicate with the faculty, Students union and LUSUMA members Look after the stick Make sure everyone does their job, LUSUMA’s aims are met, and are answerable for the actions of the committee

Vice President Must have a year’s experience on LUSUMA Responsible for obtaining Sponsorship, e.g from the BMA, MPS or MDU for Medic Events. Work with the Treasurer to apply for Students Union Funding. Organise and manage the Professional Fresher's fair and Society and Sports Fair during Introweek. Allocate Medic Parents for new 1 st years and organise Introweek Medic Parents Evening. Order Medic Hoodies and LUSUMA Committee Rugby Shirts. Support the Committee where necessary and assist in general ongoing activities, dealing with any problems or concerns. Being VP puts you in a good position to implement changes within the MedSoc from issues that you may have identified in your previous term.

Treasurer....... Does a lot! Runs LUSUMA finances Talking to the union finance office A LOT Several trips into the union a week Putting together a budget for the year (Sticking to it is the tricky part) Deliver annual financial report to members at AGM Dealing with Financial Requests How much to give LUSUMA’s sub-societies following financial requests Limited funds, have to make sure your sub-soc budget lasts the year SPORTS!! Try to keep all the sports teams happy (which they never are) with financial support Paying for sports facilities (which will be a massive hassle this year) Sports Passes Liaise with the Sports Sec (ish) for financial and other related sports topics (Travel etc) Socials Introweek – A massive part of the Treasurer’s job, both with money coming in and going out Outroweek – Also requires funding, but some is paid for by selling wristbands Other events – All other events, e.g. post exam laser quest, results night events, etc. Floats for selling tickets etc Balls Heavily involved in Summer/Winter ball financing Includes chasing up ball secs for their budgets (and limiting what they try to spend!)

Phase 2 Stuff Graduation Ball Tricky as the people organising it have already started when you take over Again need to keep a close eye on budget and their spending Yearbook (again already being organised) Leavers drinks, Post-Finals/IPEs socials The Medic Magazine and LUSUMA magazine Printing = Expensive Medic Clothing Academic Printing for revision sessions and QualiHelp sessions, handouts etc. Misc and other Admin Plenty of little things that add up throughout the year, from petrol to megaphones Grant Funding Jumping through some hoops to get some money for LUSUMA from the union Includes a presentation Can only be spend on certain things Sponsorship The VP will organise all this by liaising with companies (MDU/MPS/Wesleyan etc), but may need your help Need to chase up the sponsorship to make sure it actually arrives! Sponsorship with bars (e.g. Walkabout) is down to you Basically, anything to do with money, you WILL be involved in

Social Secretary Responsible for the organisation and smooth running of LUSUMA socials – INTROWEEK and OUTROWEEK require a huge amount of prior planning and organisation liaise with ROCKSTAR Promotions on behalf of LUSUMA – Social dates, deals, tickets...plenty of meetings

Social Secretary You need to be able to work well in a team – Not just keeping the rest of the committee involved but working with your other half! You can be creative and fun, but also requires you to be RESPONSIBLE (when it counts....) Time consuming but very rewarding – Email socialsecretary@lusuma.com for more infosocialsecretary@lusuma.com

Ball Secretary The 2 ball secretaries must work together effectively to organise the balls, including arranging the venue, catering, entertainment, etc. Summer ball; buffet style event which occurs in Outroweek Winter ball; Very formal, 3 course sit down meal They must work with the Media Officer for the ball campaign (posters/videos) Work with the Treasurer to plan the ball budget Work with the Vice President to raise sponsorship for the ball

Media Officer Going around and taking pictures on the ALL LUSUMA socials, then uploading these pictures onto the Official LUSUMA Facebook group and website. – Vetting all pictures before making them public In charge of producing and editing the Medic magazine.

Publicity roles include: – LUSUMA socials, Outroweek, summer ball, Introweek, winter ball and academic opportunities – Facebook groups and events, Twitter, shout outs, posters, videos, emails, word of mouth, sandwich board etc Freshers lanyards (fun, fun, fun) Be prepared to answer queries from everyone, especially in Introweek

Webmaster Jobs: Website sales: Ball tickets, clothing, sports passes Societies/Sports pages: Set up and provide support for technophobes PDP Certificates Downloads Page Requirements: Don’t need to able to code Lots of patience Common sense helps (but not necessary)

Grad Rep Major Duties Chemistry week events (needn’t be the same format) Grad Xmas Meal Trying to blend the L4 and L5 cohorts where possible Publicising events to the graduate cohorts including selling tickets for Balls etc Being a presence at LUSUMA events and helping out where possible Potential duties ANYTHING! Sports Secretary The Sports Secretary must oversee all of the Medic Sport teams, and ensure they are booked in for their training and fixtures. They must communicate with the Captains of the teams to sure that everything runs smoothly, and encourage as many people as possible to get involved with sport. Ensure Medic Sport Passes are taken up by all Medic Sport Teams (including collecting money) and checking their uptake Organising: Sports Awards in June, ‘Funday Sunday’ in Outroweek™ and Sports Night in Introweek™ You have to be organised with a passion for promoting sport!

International, Academic, and Welfare Officer Previous experience advised (anyone applying should discuss with Mike or Ross regarding this) Be able to liaise with the international students and address their concerns at any point throughout the year Create a welcome pack for international students before introweek that describes how to get to Leicester, what its like living here, a little about accommodation, etc Liaise with Jo Durran (representative for international students from LMS office)

International, Academic, and Welfare Officer Organise the Meet the Parents event with the VP Aid in the development of QualiHelp Sessions, between LUSUMA, Medics Welfare, and Leicester Insight Huge role in Introweek for first year welfare Attend the Student-Staff Liaison Meetings Listen to any concerns students have regarding academic or welfare issues and being able to undertake the appropriate action Undergo the necessary welfare training at the SU The officer should be: – Good with interacting with other students on a regular basis. He/she should be willing to discuss any matter that the person concerned brings up regarding work, social life etc. as a medic – Be adequately informed on where exactly to guide said student to authorised welfare staff at the med school and university – Should work closely with LUSUMA and other associations regarding potential revision sessions/guides/seminars

Phase 2 Representatives Phase 2 is a very difficult cohort to represent, engage with and provide for at this time but significant positive progress has been made Historically a role for people who just wanted a(nother) rugby shirt and cheap access to Introweek and Outroweek… But…

Phase 2 Representatives Expectations now much greater from both the student body and fellow committee members – Coordinating, selecting and assisting Stream Representatives – Assisting with and advising the committee regarding the developing Academic and Welfare initiatives – Regular End of Block socials – Exam socials – More diverse socials – Keeping track of what works and doesn’t to enable continuing progress

4 th Year Rep – MUST BE IN Jr Rotation The LUSUMA 4th Year Representative who will: ◦ (i) Perform the functions of the LUSUMA Social Secretaries and the LUSUMA Publicity Secretary, limited to the 3rd and 4th Year Class. ◦ ii) Work with the 5 th Year Representative and Academic & Welfare Representative to select and direct the Stream Representatives within, at a maximum, the first two months of the start of Junior and Senior Rotations Select, utilise, direct and assist Phase 2 Stream Representatives Represent views of the Junior Rotation students to the committee Organise EoBs, exam socials and provide LUSUMA publicity to phase 2 (Still the case but stream reps help a lot with publicity and feedback) Still expected to help in Introweek. You get to attend more socials than other 4 th years BUT may be expected to work at events like PJPC, Wimbledon, Balls and Fresher arrivals day
