Chapter 6: The Periodic Table Organizing and Classifying the Elements

Learning Targets You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Introduction to the periodic table Groups or families – Columns on the periodic table (run up and down) – Numbered 1-8 or 1-18 – Have similar characteristics Periods – Run left to right on the periodic- table (think of how a sentence looks and remember a period ends a sentence) – Numbered 1-7 You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Elements Represented by symbols w/1 st letter ALWAYS capitalized and the other letter(s) lower case Symbols come from element name or are derived from Greek, Latin or German words You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Elements and Symbols-Examples Fluorine-FOxygen-OCarbon-CNeon-NeZinc-ZnCadmium-Cd Gold-Au (aurum) Lead-Pb (plumbum) Sodium-Na (natrium) Iron-Fe (ferrum) Chlorine-ClPlatinum-Pt You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Introduction to the periodic table- what you see 1 H Hydrogen 1.008 Atomic number (determines identity of element) Element symbol Element name Gram atomic weight or average atomic mass You will identify the components of the periodic table.

How do you know where metals and non-metals are? Look at the yellow staircase line (around B, Si, As, Te, At) Left of the staircase (EXCEPT HYDROGEN) – metals Right of the staircase (INCLUDING HYDROGEN) – nonmetals You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Main groups of the Periodic Table Group 1 Alkali Metals (excluding hydrogen) – 1 st column You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Main groups of the Periodic Table Group 2 Alkaline Earth Metals – 2 nd column You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Main groups of the Periodic Table Transition Metals – In the middle of the periodic table…Groups 3-12 You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Main groups of the Periodic Table Group 7 or 17 Halogens – 2 nd column from the right You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Main groups of the Periodic Table Group 8 or 18 Noble Gases – last column You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Main groups on the periodic table Metalloids or Semi-metals – 7 elements bordering the “stair-step” line except aluminum (Al) and astatine (At) You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Diatomic molecules-forms a 7 You will identify the components of the periodic table.

s sublevel label and draw You will identify the components of the periodic table.

p sublevel label and draw You will identify the components of the periodic table.

d sublevel label and draw You will identify the components of the periodic table.

f sublevel label and draw You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Energy Levels-Label on YOUR periodic table You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Example-using periodic table Give the symbol and atomic number for each of the following elements. Also indicate whether each element is a metal or a nonmetal and whether it is a member of a named family a. argonc. barium b. chlorined. cesium You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Answers A. Ar, 18, nonmetal, noble gases B. Cl, 17, nonmetal, halogen C. Ba, 56, metal, alkaline earth metals D. Cs, 55, metal, alkali metals You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Example-using periodic table For each of the following elements, use the periodic table to give the symbol and atomic number and to specify whether the element is a metal or nonmetal. Also give the named family to which the element belongs (if any). a. Strontium b. Silicon c. Xenon You will identify the components of the periodic table.

Answers a. Sr, 38, metal, alkaline earth metal b. Si, 14, metalloid, Group 4 c. Xe, 54, nonmetal, Noble gas You will identify the components of the periodic table.

SUMMARIZE! What determines the identity of an element? Where do you find this? Where are metals and nonmetals on the periodic table? Name the six main groups or families of the periodic table. What is a diatomic molecule? How many are there? You will identify the components of the periodic table.
