Why have a Disaster Recovery plan An ITC Disaster Recovery plan is a pre- programmed sequence of events to recover IT systems and Communications ICT DR plan dovetails into the Corporate Business Continuity Plan An active document that is updated and changed as our business changes Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Kettering Borough Council Disaster Recovery Plan Covers three main areas Systems Loss Partial Building Loss Total Building Loss Full DR documentation stored off-site Flexible recovery priorities based on time of year (e.g. March – Annual Billing of Council Tax) Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Capability if System Loss occurred Single Systems Loss Using replacement hardware a single system can be recovered within hours of loss by using our real- time backup system recovery option Multiple Systems Loss Using replacement hardware and/or the emergency procurement of hardware from our DR listed providers, systems can be restored in a priority order using our Real-time Backup system recovery option Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Capability of Partial Building Loss Partial Building Loss Where partial building loss occurs at any location the IT team would link (where necessary) into the business continuity plan. Systems would be recovered on a priority order based on instruction from the Business Continuity Plan Additional hardware would be fast tracked from suppliers listed in the ICT DR Plan Staff could be redeployed to other sites and continue to access systems as normal Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Capability of Full Building Loss Where a full loss of a building occurs, the ICT DR Plan would form part of the Corporate Business Continuity Plan Emergency procurement of hardware within days of order All core systems available within seven days Emergency telephony available within hours Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Backup and Restore systems Kettering Borough Council use Microsoft Data Protection Manager for real time backups Data Protection Manager is Disk to Disk to tape technology making it very fast The DPM servers are deployed within the backup computer room at the depot Real time backups allow for minimal data loss when system recovery is needed Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Additional Resilience Kettering Borough Council uses additional mirrored storage hosted across two sites Various datasets are backed up to DVD and stored within the fireproof safe in the Corn Market Hall Various ADSL’s are deployed to allow sites to be linked up in an emergency Home and remote working technologies can be quickly deployed Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010
