WRITING TEST HERE ARE THINGS TO REMEMBER ABOUT THE WRITING TEST!

FIRST THINGS FIRST, READ THE PROMPT! Look for phrases like, “write an essay” “for your science class” “arguing” “include a claim and counterclaim” “use evidence” Here’s what the prompt will look like!

UNDERSTANDING THE PROMPT “write an essay” = write at least five paragraphs. This is not an option. “for your science class”= this is your audience. Since it’s to a class, you can be a little more informal, like using “you” sometimes. “arguing” = you’re writing an argumentative essay (remember the dream school, uniforms, and trophies essays we’ve written! “include a claim and counterclaim”= state your stance, and then go against that stance “use evidence”= TEXT EVIDENCE (QUOTES) FROM ALL OF THE ARTICLES!!!!

ANALYZE THE PROMPT Read and re-read the prompt. What are they asking you to do? What are you writing about? Who are you writing it to?

You’ll be given three articles to read and cite evidence from! They are lengthy and you’ll have to do some skimming.

CITING Just like this one, many of the articles won’t have an author stated. To cite your quotes, just write (article one) or (source one) or (Lost Cities, Lost Treasure) – or whatever the title of the article is.

USE ALL OF THE ARTICLES/SOURCES!!!!! The prompt will tell you to use evidence from multiple sources. This means to provide evidence from all of the articles that they give you.

TYPING YOUR RESPONSE: If the prompt asks you to write a letter, PLEASE remember to write it in letter format, which includes a greeting such as, “Dear Parents of Students,” Indent all new paragraphs Always remember to put a hook!

TOOLS You can pause and save your writing test in case you need to exit the testing room or go to a different room to finish. Make sure to save! Use these tools to help you!

TERMS TO REMEMBER Claim= this is your opinion or stance on a certain topic Counter-claim= this is the opinion AGAINST your claim Rebuttal= this is how the counter-claim is STILL WRONG! Hook= the first sentence of your essay to draw the reader in Thesis= the last sentence of your first paragraph that lets the reader know what your essay will be about Essay= at least five paragraphs Evidence= quotes from the articles

Forget to cite the quotes ! Say, “I think…” Use one article! Write less than five paragraphs! DONOTDONOT
