Child Rights and Responsibilities in India (in accordance with UN Convention on Child Rights,1989 ) Child has the right to have a name and Nationality without any discrimination. Child has the responsibility to respect rules and regulations of the country.

Child has the right to express his/her views without any fear. Child has the responsibility to respect other’s views and opinions.

Child has the responsibility to obey the rules and regulations of the school and pay respect to the teachers. Child has the right to go to school.

Every child has the right to good health care. Child has the responsibility to take care of his/her health and hygiene.

Child has the right to clean food and water. Child has the responsibility not to waste food and water

Child has the responsibility to be brought up by a family under proper care and protection and in adequate standard of living. Child has the responsibility to pay respect to his elders and members of family.

Child has the responsibility to not to indulge in the acts of violence and abuse. Child has the right to protection against exploitation.

Some facts about CHILD RIGHTS in India: o2o27 million children are born every year in India.6 out of 10 of them are never registered. There is no documented proof that they exist! o1o1 out of 14 children in India (more than 1.9 million every year) dies before the age of 5, usually due to causes that could have been prevented. 25 million children are orphaned.

o9o9 out of 10 children in India have water from improved water sources. Only 3 out of 10 children can use adequate sanitation facilities. oAoAlmost 5 out of 10 children in India live in extreme poverty with less than 62 Rupees a day to live on. oOoOnly 23 countries have forbidden all forms of corporal punishment for children. Many still allow caning in schools. At least 44 million children(5-14 years) in India work. Many in hazardous labour. o8o8 out of 10 children in India go to school, but many of them leave school too early.

There are 13 candidates for World Children’s Prize for the Rights of a Child(WCPRC) who will be awarded in the Decade Global Vote (From 15 April to 25 October). Him Academy Public School is participating in this Global Vote event and will make its students experience Democracy.

IQBAL MASIH, PAKISTAN (POSTHUMOUSLY) IIqbal was a debt slave in a carpet factory. When he was set free he fought for the rights of debt slave children. He was killed on 16 April 1995.

AAsfaw was a street child at the age of 9. At 14, he opened his first school for street children underneath an oak tree. Since then he was devoted over 50 years to giving underprivileged children the chance to go to school. ASFAW YEMIRU,ETHOPIA

NKOSI JOHNSON, SOUTH AFRICA (POSTHUMOUSLY) NNkosi fought for the rights of children with HIV and AIDS up untill his death at the age of 12.

MAITI,NEPAL MMaiti fights the trafficking of poor girls from Nepal to India, where they are forced to work as slaves in brothel. Maiti also helps girls who have been affected by trafficking.

MAGGY BARANKITSE,BURUNDI MMaggy has, over 15 years, saved tens of thousands of orphaned children in war-torn Burundi and given them a home,love, schooling and a hospital.

JAMES AQUER,SUDAN JJames has over 20 years, freed thousands of kidnapped children from slave work in Sudan. James has been imprisoned 33 times and 4 of his colleagues have been murdered.

PRATEEP UNGSONGTHAM HATA,THAILAND PPrateep was a child worker at the age of ten. Since starting her first school at the age of 16,she was spent 40 years fighting to give the neediest children the chance to go to school.

DUNGA MOTHERS,KENYA TTwenty mothers in Kenya, who for the past 12 years, have been fighting to enable AIDS orphans in their village to go to school,have a home,food, love, and have their own rights respected.
