Prisms Unit 12 Section 1 Identify the parts of prisms Find the lateral areas, total areas, and volumes of right prisms
2
bases lateral edges lateral face altitude Prisms bases: shaded faces – congruent polygons lying on parallel planes altitude: segment joining the two bases and perpendicular to both. The length of the altitude is called the height lateral faces: faces of a prism that are not to bases. Lateral faces are parallelograms lateral edges: intersections of lateral faces
3
Right prism: lateral faces are rectangles and lateral edges are altitudes Oblique prism: lateral faces are parallelogram but not rectangles and lateral edges are not altitudes Right rectangular prism Oblique hexagonal prism
4
Surface Area measured in square units Lateral area (LA): sum of the areas of the lateral faces. The lateral area of a right prism equals the perimeter of a base times the height of the prism. LA = ph Total area (TA): sum of the areas of all its faces. B equals the area of the base. TA = LA + 2B
5
measured in cubic units Volume Volume of a right prisms equals the area of a base times the height of the prism. V = Bh
