Passive to Active Engagement Session

What you’ll learn today Active engagement is a good opportunity across Canadian Programs. Active engagement and Passive engagement are two very different things. Simple, concrete strategies to achieve more active engagement. To start thinking about how to get better at active engagement.

Before we get started

CAP strategies 2012 FAIR TRADE – 2012 will be a very exciting time for fair trade at the chapter level, as we will be launching a new fair trade product that we think will be very relevant to the chapters at their Universities. – We plan to distribute promotional packages and materials to chapters following My Fair Valentine in February that will start the campaign around fair trade notebooks! – These notebooks are made of fairly traded material and have been implemented with great success across Great Britain over the past 3 years. They are a good investment for EWB and will be very popular with University students who are increasingly ethical consumers.

CAP strategies 2012 YOUTH ENGAGEMENT – Following some great conversations on leadership day, the youth engagement distributed team is happy to announce that the youth engagement program over the next year will focus on the creation of high school chapters across our network. – A few chapters have tried this already, and we will take the lessons learned from these chapters so that you can form your own high school chapters, to support and mentor throughout the year!

CAP strategies 2012 ADVOCACY – The success of the IATI campaign made it evident that EWB has great strength across our network of chapter leaders, particularly when it comes to building positive relationships with Members of Parliament. – For 2012, the Advocacy team has decided that a significant part of our chapter-based Advocacy work in Canada will focus on building a “chapter buddy” system between chapters and their local representatives! More information will be available very soon.

CAP strategies 2012 GLOBAL ENGINEERING – 2011 saw great strides in the curriculum enhancement work of Global Engineering in University classrooms across the country. – Working from this success, GE will work this year on the development and implementation of a Masters Program in Global Engineering. Chapter members studying engineering in their last year of University will be the primary actors at the chapter level, but this is an exciting step forward for everyone in EWB!

Motivations behind CAP strategies 2012 In recent consultations and through some difficult conversations, the CAP team has flagged a priority of leveraging the true venture capital potential of our chapter network. By harnessing and releasing the innovations and ideations incubated by the systems changers in our pipeline, we can scale our net impact ten-fold. We believe the new strategies moving forward reflect this understanding and prioritization, and in parallel to our organizational-wide investment in the core, look forward to the return on investment of these new specific, strategic, and systemic program priorities.
