Starter What would be thoughts of these two people on the big juicy burger?
3
Could they ever come to an agreement? They are the total opposite. Well this links to HFP when he and Stalin signed the Nazi Soviet Pact in 1939.
4
Czechoslovakia “This was an abrupt and fateful turning point for Chamberlain and for Britain … The Prime Minister at last saw that Hitler had deceived him.” William Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich (1959)
5
The Nazi-Soviet Pact “Germany and Russia agreed to bury the hatchet; they agreed to bury it in Poland.” BBC TV, Why Appeasement?
6
The Nazi-Soviet Pact On 23 August, 1939, the world was shocked when, suddenly, Russia and Germany signed a 'Non-aggression Pact'. It amounted to an agreement to invade and divide the countries of eastern Europe between them... with Poland first on the list.
7
Stalin’s Dilemma Hitler offered Stalin a Nazi-Soviet alliance – Russia and Germany would not go to war, but would divide Poland between them. Germany would allow Russia to annex Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland. Stalin knew Hitler was lying, but he did not trust the British either – the Munich Agreement had convinced him that Britain and France would never dare to go to war with Hitler. Stalin had two choices: - If he made an alliance with Britain, he would end up fighting a war with Hitler over Poland - If he made an alliance with Germany, he would get half of Poland and time to prepare for the coming war with Germany On 23 August 1939, he signed the Pact with Hitler.
8
Why did Stalin choose to sign the Pact? ….Because Hitler was a THUG !
9
Why did Stalin choose to sign the Pact? T = Time to prepare for war Military could be prepared H = Hope to gain A long war between Germany, France and Britain would weaken all 3 powers U = Unhappy with Britain Stalin did not trust Britain and had failed to negotiate an alliance with her G = Germany and Russia united Britain would not declare war if both invaded Poland and would have to back down
10
What did Britain and America make of this?
11
Who is the little girl? Who is the wolf? Who is the bear? What is the message of this cartoon? Source A This 1939 cartoon was drawn for the American public by the US cartoonist Herb Block
12
Source A The merging of two cautionary fairy-tales about predators Little girl (Goldilocks/Little Red Riding Hood) = Poland, weak and vulnerable Wolf from Little Red Riding Hood = Germany (Hitler hair) 'all the better to EAT you with'. Bear from Goldilocks = Soviet Russia Wolf + Bear = united to devour little girl (Poland) The message of the cartoon is that Hitler and Stalin are aggressive predators who have united to destroy and divide Poland between them.
13
What do the greetings poses signify? What does the body of a dead Polish soldier signify? What do the exaggerated greetings/insults signify? What is the message of this cartoon? Source B This cartoon by the British cartoonist David Low was published in the Evening Standard newspaper on 20 th September 1939.
14
Source B Greetings pose = they are allies Dead Polish soldier/ rubble of war= they have invaded and conquered Poland. EXAGGERATED greetings/ muttered insults = REALLY, they hate each other. The message of the cartoon is that Hitler and Stalin are cynical and deceitful, and they have made an alliance with their worst enemy simply to invade, conquer and divide Poland.
15
What do the smiles on Hitler and Stalin signify? What do the flowers signify? What do the guns signify? What is the message of this cartoon? Source C This cartoon by the British cartoonist David Low was published in the Evening Standard newspaper on 21 st October 1939.
16
Source C Smiles/ arms-round-each-other/ tied legs = they are allies. Flowers = pretending 'everything is rosy' Guns behind their backs = REALLY, they hated each other and waiting for a chance to attack the other The message of the cartoon is that Hitler and Stalin may have conquered and taken Poland - but the cost of that was an alliance with their worst enemy... and the constant worry of the knowledge that someday their ally would turn on them attack them.
