The Economic Crisis The first quarter of 2009 saw a decline in gross domestic product at an annual rate of 5.5% after falling by 6.3% in the fourth quarter of 2008. The economy has lost 6.5 million jobs since the recession began in December 2007, and 3.4 million jobs in 2009 alone. The unemployed are out of a job for record lengths. Hit First and Worst People of color have been in a recession for nearly five years and have entered a depression during the current economic crisis. (State of the Dream 2009) The Economic Policy Institute reported that without a recovery package, Black and Hispanic unemployment rates could reach as high as 18.2% and 13.1% respectively in 2010 (versus a white unemployment rate of almost 9%).
