A plan Snapshots start the conversation ongoing discussion in the staff section of the Digital Learning Tools @ USQ community at http://snipurl.com/usqdigitaltools http://snipurl.com/usqdigitaltools 3 minute discussion How to use Turnitin with your students Using the Originality report Issues and discussion
3
Turnitin is Turnitin for educators (USQ uses only the OriginalityCheck component of Turnitin) – PeerMark: manages and simplifies peer review – OriginalityCheck produces a similarity report for the document – GradeMark tools for paperless marking WriteCheck for students pay $4.95 per document originality check
4
Does Turnitin detect plagiarism? “… Turnitin does not detect plagiarism per se; Turnitin just finds text that matches other sources in the vast Turnitin databases and shows those matches. It is up to a human being to determine whether those text matches are a problem or not…. the Similarity Index is NOT a ‘plagiarism index’…. does Turnitin detect plagiarism? No - Turnitin offers a tool that helps educators (and their students) make informed evaluations of student work rapidly and move on to the important task of discerning what their students need in the way of instruction, correction or judicial action.” from http://community.turnitin.com/members/blog_view.asp?id=5 97928&post=107645 http://community.turnitin.com/members/blog_view.asp?id=5 97928&post=107645
5
What is plagiarism and how can we respond? (3 minute discussion e.g. self plagiarism)
6
Plagiarism and USQ's response to plagiarism USQ’s policies and processes – http://www.usq.edu.au/plagiarism http://www.usq.edu.au/plagiarism Teaching and Learning resources – http://www.usq.edu.au/learnteach/ http://www.usq.edu.au/learnteach/ 2 approaches (complementary or competing) – punitive and reactive – educative and preventative
7
Using Turnitin with your students establish a Moodle Assignment activity in your course and decide if: – students can see the originality report (and when) – students can resubmit multiple versions of the document – students need to submit the assignment through EASE If students resubmit the assignment in EASE you could: – require students to download the originality report from Moodle and append this to their assignment submitted in EASE – scan the Similarity reports in Moodle when you mark the assignment in EASE Clearly tell students if they are to resubmit the document in EASE or use the Turnitin Originality Report generator course at: http://usqstudydesk.usq.edu.au/course/view.php?id=17223 http://usqstudydesk.usq.edu.au/course/view.php?id=17223
8
Historically Historically some staff setup a course account on http://wwwTurnitin.com and students submit there assignment there but this is not longer supportedhttp://wwwTurnitin.com Contact studydesk@usq.edu.au if you need to do thisstudydesk@usq.edu.au
9
Setting up a Turnitin enabled assignment activity in Moodle Click Turn editing on (top right of your Moodle course) Use the Add an activity menu and select Advanced uploading of files or Upload a single file Set: – Use Turnitin Submission to Yes – Show Turnitin Score to student to your preference – Show Turnitin Report to student to your preference Turnitin only scans Microsoft Word (.doc or docx), Word Perfect (.wp or.wpd), Postscript (.ps), tesdt searchable PDF (.pdf) and text (.txt) files
10
Accessing the originality report students do this in the same way (if you have allowed them to see the originality report) – go into the Moodle assignment activity – click the similarity report link after the document name
11
Features of the originality report video at http://turnitin.com/static/videos/instructor_viewingor.htmlhttp://turnitin.com/static/videos/instructor_viewingor.html matching text is highlighted with percentage of matching words – clicking highlighted text shows context or clicking the link shows the document – matching text in a private document is not shown without permission You can: – show primary sources (the most similar document) or all sources (showing all sources containing subsets of matching text) – exclude selected sources display secondary sources and then click Select sources to exclude then select sources – apply filters to the matching text Exclude quotes or block indented text Exclude bibliography (must be under heading bibliography, works cited or references set the min size of a match The text only view can be copied and appended to an assignment
12
Originality report help Online help at the top of the Originality report Vendor site at http://www.turnitin.comhttp://www.turnitin.com Originality report video: http://turnitin.com/static/videos/instructor_view ingor.html http://turnitin.com/static/videos/instructor_view ingor.html Help centre at http://turnitin.com/static/helpCenter http://turnitin.com/static/helpCenter Instructor manual (p 46 to 54 of 189) at http://turnitin.com/static/resources/documentati on/turnitin/training/en_us/Instructor_Manual_e n_us.pdf http://turnitin.com/static/resources/documentati on/turnitin/training/en_us/Instructor_Manual_e n_us.pdf
13
Sources in the Turnitin database current and archived internet institution paper repository – USQ does not appear to do this e.g. a course is not matched periodicals student paper repository – you are shown matches but not content of private papers unless you are given permission (rarely given)
14
Cheating Turnitin from http://community.turnitin.com/members/blog_view.asp?id =597928&post=107667 http://community.turnitin.com/members/blog_view.asp?id =597928&post=107667 – Replace character with similar foreign characters e.g. e with ë – Use macros to replace characters on the fly – Replace spaces with invisible white text – Quote or indent entire assignment Ways to address these: – Turnitin continually modifies its algorithms to counter these strategies – you should always look at the contents of the similarity report rather than the percentage
15
Issues Only the following documents are scanned: – MS Word (.doc), WordPerfect (.wpd), PostScript (.eps), text searchable Portable Document Format (.pdf), HTML (.htm), Rich Text (.rtf) and Plain Text (.txt). Does Turnitin scan all documents or only a sample? Some public searchable PDFs do not appear to be in the Turnitin database e.g. ePortfolio flyer Are we coaching students to reduce the level of plagiarism? Turnitin does nor show private documents unless you are given permission (happens rarely)
16
