12 Bureaucracy =  Large, complex structures that handles the everyday business of an organization  Ex. McDonald’s, Roman Catholic Church, universities, Rochester Community Schools  Why? Without the people who make bureaucracy happen, laws would just be words and nothing would get done.

16 White House Office National Security Council Executive Office of President  Located mostly in the West Wing  Includes President’s key personal and political staff:  Chief of Staff (most influential presidential aid)  Press Secretary  Counsel (legal advisor)  President’s physician  Advises President in all domestic, foreign, and military matters related to the nation’s security  Includes:  Vice President  Secretaries of Defense and State  CIA director  Joint Chiefs of Staff (high ranking military personnel)

19 Executive Departments  Each executive department is headed by a secretary (ex. Secretary of Defense)  Except the Dept. of Justice headed by the Attorney General  These secretaries: 1.Head their executive department 2.Form the President’s Cabinet

20 Executive Departments The President’s Cabinet  The President appoints the secretaries for the 15 executive departments  These appointments MUST be approved by the Senate  The secretaries form the President’s Cabinet  Made up of experts in their areas of government, the Cabinet advises the President
