Prepared by: J. S. Pickett pickett@uiowa.edu University of Iowa 8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 2008 2 AI-3 to WBD/PEACE: Explain the temporal deviations between WBD and PEACE, e.g., are they caused by instrumental effects in PEACE or wave cut-offs in WBD are not local. Due 19 May 2008. WBD completed its investigation in May 2008 of the temporal deviations between WBD and PEACE determinations of density in the low density magnetotail. Based on this investigation, some WBD data intervals were discarded due to the uncertainty of the cut-off frequency. Reference Ondrej Santolik email of 23 May 2008 to Andrew Fazakerley with copy to CAA (Harri Laakso). WBD, for its part, considers this action item closed. 1. Action Items from 7 th Cross Calibration Workshop – S1

Prepared by: J. S. Pickett pickett@uiowa.edu University of Iowa 8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 2008 3 AI-4 to WBD: Clarify if more low-density cut-off events could be available. Due 19 May 2008. WBD identified more events from the summer/fall 2007 tail season where WBD data might lend itself to obtaining the density through a frequency cutoff in low density regions. Once the density data have been derived, they could be used by PEACE for density comparisons. Reference Ondrej Santolik email of 23 May 2008 to Andrew Fazakerley with copy to CAA (Harri Laakso). WBD considers this AI closed. 1. Action Items from 7 th Cross Calibration Workshop – S2

Prepared by: J. S. Pickett pickett@uiowa.edu University of Iowa 8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 2008 4 T1: The board notes the lack of caveat information from most instruments and requests its immediate provision. WBD has already archived an “Interpretation Issues” documents which already addresses this request. T2: The board requests that all instrument teams confirm that all supporting products, such as housekeeping data, that is necessary for the full interpretation of data is provided in the CAA. All supporting products will be included in the WBD digital data files with references to supporting documentation needed to fully interpret the WBD data 2. Recommendations from 3 rd Operations Review - S1

Prepared by: J. S. Pickett pickett@uiowa.edu University of Iowa 8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 2008 5 T3: The board wishes to reinforce recommendation #25 of the previous review and asks the instrument teams to produce a formal technical report on their instrument calibration and cross-calibration activities. The board thanks the EDI team for already providing such a calibration report. WBD acknowledges recommendation. WBD has already archived a calibration document. A formal technical report on calibration and cross-calibration activities will not be written until WBD is producing cdf data files for conversion to cef. T4: The board recommends that all teams produce a brief user guide to their data sets to help users to select the right products for their needs and to interpret caveat and quality information. WBD acknowledges recommendation and will produce a brief user guide once cdf files are being produced and converted to cef. 2. Recommendations from 3 rd Operations Review – S2

Prepared by: J. S. Pickett pickett@uiowa.edu University of Iowa 8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 2008 6 Recommendations from Operations Review – 3 (May, 2008): T5: The board reminds all instrument teams of the necessity to provide all data for years 2001-2009 to the CAA before June 2010. WBD acknowledges reminder and will comply with the board’s wishes to the best of its ability. WBD would like to remind the Board, however, that the design of the WBD cdf files, for conversion to cef, has only begun in September 2008 with the first file production projected to occur in November or December 2008. Archiving 9 years of data in 1½ years will be a monumental feat! 2. Recommendations from 3 rd Operations Review – S3

Prepared by: J. S. Pickett pickett@uiowa.edu University of Iowa 8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 2008 7 Recommendations from Operations Review – 3 (May, 2008): T14: The board encourages the WBD team to make an effort to provide WBD digital files to the CAA. The Cluster NASA Senior Review proposal was submitted to NASA on 21 Feb. 2008 and presented to the Senior Review Board on 8 Apr. 2008. The proposal contained a request for augmentation funding for Iowa to create WBD digital data files in cdf format for archival at the Cluster US Data Center (CDAWeb) with transfer by either Iowa or CDAWeb to the CAA for conversion to cef. Based on the Senior Review Board’s recommendations, NASA decided to fund Iowa’s archival effort. Iowa submitted a proposal to NASA Goddard Space Flight Center on 12 June 2008 and began designing the WBD cdf files in advance of the receipt of the funding, which is expected to be effective as of 1 October 2008. 2. Recommendations from 3 rd Operations Review – S4

Prepared by: J. S. Pickett pickett@uiowa.edu University of Iowa 8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 2008 12 No activity: Waveform cross-calibration previously carried out with EFW, which identified some timing, sign (of E-field) and receiver response issues which have been dealt with Recent activity: A review of Power Spectral Density cross- calibration previously carried out with STAFF-SA does not show good agreement above 700 Hz:  Refer to Maksimovic presentation at the 1 st Cross- Calibration Workshop, Feb. 2006, Slide 18  We are looking into the possibility for someone from STAFF-SA to follow up on this as WBD/Whisper shows moderately good agreement Current Activity: working on cross calibration with PEACE of densities in low density regions (primarily below WHISPER cutoff frequency) 5. Cross-Calibration Activity – S1

Aug 17, 2001, Cluster 4 fLfL f pe 2-s spin pattern 5. Cross-Calibration Activity – S2

The observations show the L-X mode cutoff at L=0 Conditions: f pe > f ce Plasma frequency > cyclotron fr. Frequency of the cutoff: f L = 1/2 [-f ce + (f ce 2 + 4 f pe 2 ) 1/2 ] ~ f pe - 1/2 f ce Observations: f L = 3.5 kHz, f ce ~ 1 kHz (measured by FGM) => => f pe ~ 4 kHz => plasma density n = 0.2 /cc The frequency of 4 kHz also corresponds to the observed change in the spin pattern. Explication : L-X mode changes to Z mode + free space L-O mode at f pe Interpretation 5. Cross-Calibration Activity – S3

Processed 2001-2006 magnetotail events: densities 0.03/cc – 0.9/cc 5. Cross-Calibration Activity – S4

Prepared by: J. S. Pickett pickett@uiowa.edu University of Iowa 8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 2008 16 Comparison study done by the PEACE team in April 2008: most of the cases show a reasonable agreement, but some of them show differences. The results were recently discussed with the PEACE team: some of the WBD continuum cases do not show a clear local cutoff – number of cases needs to be further reduced. Several new cases in 2007 – will be processed. Estimate: January 2009 5. Cross-Calibration Activity – S5

Prepared by: J. S. Pickett pickett@uiowa.edu University of Iowa 8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 2008 17 6. Archiving Plan - S1 Limited amount of funding will be provided to the University of Iowa by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to create WBD cdf files for archival at the US Data Center (CDAWeb) Only one cdf data product will be archived and will contain the WBD time series and supporting data WBD cdf files will probably be 10 minutes in length to match the WBD Level 1 files from which they were produced and be compressed Once cdf files are generated and archived at CDAWeb, they will be transferred to the CAA for conversion to cef and archival WBD has adopted a theme of keeping everything simple, so  Each time variable will correspond to one data point  Each data point will be in calibrated field units

Prepared by: J. S. Pickett pickett@uiowa.edu University of Iowa 8 th Cross-Calibration Workshop, Kinsale, Ireland, 28-30 October 2008 18 6. Archiving Plan - S2 Proposed Global Attributes for cdf files: Reference to WBD calibration document  Can be downloaded from the CAA (and CDAWeb) for details on how the calibration of WBD data was carried out.  Provides the means to reverse calibrate to obtain the actual measured raw data numbers (0 to 255) Information on how to transform the time series to the frequency domain using supplied sampling rates which are dependent on the Bandwidth variable Coordinate system used Useful WBD-specific information and links to WBD documentation
