The people of East Pakistan wanted their own state. West Pakistan opposed. Civil war broke out and East Pakistan won its independence. This is how Bangladesh became a country. East and West Pakistan shared a religious bond, but ethnic differences and 1,100 miles drove them apart.

Most people in the region are Muslims. Pakistan is stricter in imposing Islamic laws. One custom followed is purdah which is the seclusion of women. Women are prevented from having contact with men who are not relatives. When they are in public the must wear veils.

Poetry is a special interest in Pakistan and Bangladesh. The tradition of oral literature is strong. Bangladeshis' greatest literary figure is the poet Rabindranath Tagore. Nepal and Bhutan are located in the Himalayas. The rugged landscape has isolated both countries throughout history. Hindu kings ruled Nepal. Buddhist priests controlled Bhutan. Today both countries are governed by constitutional monarchies.

Both Nepal and Bhutan are poor countries. Tourism is becoming one of the fastest growing industries. This has helped the economy, but all the tourism harms the environment.

Majority of people are Indo-Nepalese Hindus. Their ancestors came from India many centuries ago. Hindu rulers came into power, Hindu practices show traces of Buddhist influence.

In Sri Lanka 75% of the population are Sinhaleses Buddhists. Religion plays a key role in the culture in Sri Lanka. Muslim customs have a strong influence in the Maldives. Islam is Maldives state religion. No other religions are allowed.
