4. 1. India and Pakistan a brief History The British rule in 1947 brought the Partition, or division of India and Pakistan. Two countries were created India (predominantly Hindu) and Pakistan (Predominantly Muslim). As a result 1 million people died. 10 million fled across the border. Indian and Pakistani Soldiers

5. 12. Kashmir Conflict Pakistan and India fought many wars over Kashmir, a territory at the foothills of the Himalayas. Because both Pakistan and India have nuclear weapons, the Kashmir conflict has the potential to lead to nuclear war. Kashmir

10. 7. Family and Marriage For both Indians and Pakistani’s, family and marriage are at the center of life. Many Indians and Pakistanis follow the custom of arranged marriages, where their families choose their spouses for them. Pakistani Bride and GroomIndian Bride and Groom

11. 5. Indian Diet Most Indians eat a largely vegetarian diet based on rice, legumes, and flatbreads called chapati or roti. Indians do not eat beef, because cows are sacred in Hinduism. Chapati or Roti Cauliflower, potatoes, curry, and rice

12. 10. Pakistani Diet Pakistanis eat a lot more meat than most Indians. There main dishes usually consist of beef, chicken, or goat. However, because they are Muslim, they do not eat pork. Paistani Beef Kabob Haleem, a thick meat porridge.

13. 6. Indian Economy Pakistan and India are similar in that many of their people are subsistence farmers. Two- thirds of India’s people rely on farming for their livelihood. However, India is quickly becoming industrialized. India now is a major world producer of chemicals, metals and electronics.

14. 11. Pakistani Economy Pakistan has not been as effective in developing it’s industries. Like India, the majority of the people are farmers. However, unlike India, most factories are small and lack the money to develop. An important economic development has been microcredit loans which has allowed poor businesses to get small loan. 15. 8. British Colonies Despite their differences, Pakistan and India share one similarity. Both India and Pakistan were a British Colony. In 1947 Great Britain partitioned the former Indian colony into Muslim Pakistan and Hindu India. As a result Muslims and Hindus living on the wrong side of the border had to pick up and move.
