Warm-up Properties of Quadrilaterals Powerpoint Pondering Polyhedrons Guided Practice Sorting Solids Models and Pictorials

Properties of Quadrilaterals (Warm Up) Following are sets of side lengths for some quadrilaterals. Match the side lengths with the correct quadrilateral. Side lengths of 5, 5, 8, and 8 Side lengths of 5, 5, 6, and 14 Side lengths of 8, 8, 8, and 8 Side lengths of 4, 3, 5, and 14 Square Trapezoid A quadrilateral that is not a parallelogram. Rectangle

Pondering Polyhedrons What is a polyhedron? A polyhedron is a solid geometric figure that has four or more plane faces. For example: prisms and pyramids are polyhedrons.

Pondering Polyhedron What is a prism? What is a cylinder? What is a pyramid? What is a cone? A three-dimensional figure with two parallel bases and sides that are rectangles. A three-dimensional figure with one base and sides that are triangles. A three-dimensional figure with two parallel bases that are circles and the face is rectangular. A three-dimensional figure with one circular base and the face is a semicircle.

Pondering Polyhedrons Name the type of polyhedron? pyramid prism pyramid

What are the bases of a polyhedron? Pondering Polyhedrons The bases are the sides or faces on which the three-dimensional figure stands. What are the faces of a polyhedron? A net is a two-dimensional shape that can be folded into a three-dimensional shape. What is the vertex of a polyhedron? The faces are the two-dimensional sides of a three-dimensional figure. What is the net of a polyhedron? The vertex is a common point of three or more faces of a three-dimensional figure.

Pondering Polyhedrons How do we name prisms? Name the prisms pictured below: cube Prisms are named by the shape of their bases. rectangular prism triangular prism A cube is a special rectangular prism made up of rectangles that are all squares.

Pondering Polyhedrons With your partner describe the net of the prisms and then draw the net of the prisms. The net of a cube is six squares. The net of a rectangular prism is six rectangles. The net of a triangular prism is two triangles and three rectangles.

Give the number of faces, edges and vertices for each prism. ___ faces ___ edges___ faces ___ edges ___ vertices___ edges ___vertices ___ vertices Pondering Polyhedrons 6 12 6 5 9 8 8 6

Pondering Polyhedrons How do we name pyramids? Name the pyramids pictured below: Pyramids are named by the shape of their base. square pyramid triangular pyramid

Pondering Polyhedrons With your partner describe the net of the pyramids and then draw the net of the pyramids. The net of a square pyramid is one square and four triangles. The net of a triangular pyramid is four triangles..

Give the number of faces, edges and vertices for each pyramid. ___ face ___ faces ___ edges ___ edges ___ vertices___vertices Pondering Polyhedrons 5 8 4 4 5 4

With your partner describe the net of a cylinder and then draw the net of the cylinder. The net of a cylinder is two circles for the bases and a rectangular face. It has no vertices and no edges.

Pondering Polyhedrons With your partner describe the net of a cone and then draw the net of the cone. The net of a cone is a circle for the base and a partial circle for the face. It has one vertex and no edges.

Sorting Solids (Guided Practice) You can sort solid figures by how they look and how they act. For example, some solid figures roll and some don’t. Name these solid figures and then sort them into two categories. Cylinder Pyramids Rectangular Prism Triangular Prism Cube Cone Figures That RollFigures That Don’t Roll
