6 ETRE FEMME the media tool to encourage men to voice out against violence towards women. Influential Men of Mauritius to deliver a 2 minute message to say NO TO VIOLENCE. Survivors too gave their testimonies. BACKGROUND The program was produced - 16 days of activism to end GBV. 24% of women in Mauritius have experienced violence and almost same proportion of men have perpetrated violence. Women alone will not end the tragedy. Men must be part of the struggle.

16 The public at large. Men who perpetrate GBV. Men and young boys. I strongly believe that men talking to men can bring the change. Survivors of GBV so that they go forward disclosing any form of violence happening under their roof as well as young girls. The concerned authorities. TARGET AUDIENCE

17 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA PROCESS/METHODOLOGY Influential men as well as women survivors to raise the awareness and interest of listeners. 16 men and 16 women consulted for gender balance. Help of Gender Links and made lots of telephone calls. I spent 2 days to finalise the list. I booked the studio for the recording of the messages. Recording took 2 days.

18 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA Service delivery RESULTS After the campaign collaboration has been strengthened with the Family Protection Unit – Mrs Michele Thomas – Chef Police Inspector is giving her full support to ETRE FEMME. The public has her mobile number: 5 251 27 30. The Ministry of Gender Equality uses our platform very often for explanatory programs about their services to the population. The public has the hotline of the Ministry for any help: 139 or 119. The Ombudsperson for children works closely with us too. Their Hotline is 177

19 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT Great impact on our listeners (and viewers) as men have accepted that their partners be empowered and women have on their side followed the example which the survivors gave in their testimonies. So they have been motivated to go forward. Anielle a listener whose husband was perpetrating GBV said she is no more dependent on her husband. She has launched her own SME further to our regular program with the National Women Entrepreneur Council.

21 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA PUBLIC PARTICIPATION More and more men are calling in live on radio to disclose GBV. We have a network supporting our program. Men are no more hiding behind nick names to speak out about the matter. Rajen – Mohamed – Gerard – Wesley are among the listeners who call in regularly. Men and women are having live interactions about the matter of GBV.

We are aware of 50/50 content in news editions. Anouksha LAVAL is Head Engineer. Sandra Mayotte and Narvada Khadun are the 2 co-ordinators appointed by Management for Senn Kreol and Bhojpuri Channel.

23 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA OUTREACH THROUGH THE MEDIA The outreach was beyond expectations. The messages were also transmitted on News Channel and Senn Kreol. More than 60% of the population reached. (30% on radio – 10% on News Channel – 20% Senn Kreol)

24 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA CHANGES AT HOUSEHOLD LEVEL EQUALITY BEGINS AT HOME Men admit that women are contributing in the progress of the family. ‘Mo madam travail li pe contribue dans la caz sans oublie ki li pe get mo bane zanfan’. Si mo rent avan li mo commence met manze or dife. ‘Madam pane faire pou bate. Si ena problem bizin dialogué’. Both men and women are understanding each other. Men recognize that women should be taken as serious, that she too has her importance at home.

After the campaign more and more requests of appointment from for private consultation. Before men would only leave a message off air if ever they wanted to share their opinion, but now they do it openly.

The Ministry of Gender Equality has solicited our collaboration for several programs with different topics specially on GBV. The Ombudsperson for children has also asked to sponsor ETRE FEMME. The Ombudsperson for children said: ‘Nous voulons travailler avec vous’. Every Friday – Live interaction program with: Priya Dilchand – Life Coach and Christiane Valery - Psycho Therapist. Twice a month follow up with Veronique Wan Hok Chee a psychologist for children.
