Cheshire & Merseyside Healthy Providers Network are committed to putting health and wellbeing at the heart of every contact with patients, clients, our workforce and the communities we serve. We support provider organisations to aspire to gain World Health Organisation (WHO) and/or Royal Society of Public Health accreditation. To celebrate National Smile Month, Alder Hey held a special event to back the UK’s biggest oral health campaign. Smile Month takes place every year from 19 th May to 19 th June and aims to promote and raise awareness of good oral health. An awareness stand at the main entrance was available on two days to raise awareness. Everyone who attended received a free toothbrush, toothpaste and information on keeping your mouth healthy. The event was supported by Royal Liverpool Dental Hospital Staff who shared information on good dental practice. Over 100 children attended the event over the two days. Evaluation of the campaign showed that families were unaware of the correct amount of fluoride to use in their child’s toothpaste before attending the event. Fun Facts People who only brush once a day are a third more likely to develop tooth decay 25% of adults don’t brush twice a day including a third of men People believe they brush for as long as 2.5mins but are actually brushing for only 56 seconds 1 in 3 of us only visit our dentist when we have a problem or we are in pain. Key Messages Brush your teeth twice a day for at least two minutes Always use a fluoride toothpaste containing at least 1,450ppm (check the packaging to find out how much fluoride each brand contains) Regular dental check-ups are important Keep food and drink containing sugar to meal times Royal Dental Health Team & Alder Hey Health Promotion Team Welcome to the fourth edition of the Cheshire and Merseyside Healthy Providers Network Newsletter. The 22 nd International Conference on Health Promoting Hospitals and Health Services Changing hospital and health service culture to better promote health. Barcelona, Spain 23 rd – 25 th April 2014 This year the conference was dedicated to “changing hospital & health service culture to better promote health”. By focusing on this general theme, the conference program acknowledged the need for organisation-wide reform and development to support a more health promoting culture in health care, following the demand of WHO’s Ottawa Charter for a re-orientation of healthcare services, and concepts of Health Promoting Hospitals (HPH) and Health Services. Representatives from 3 organisations attended and funding was secured via individual employers. Those in attendance from the Cheshire and Merseyside area included; Rachael Gosling, Consultant in Public Health, Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust Ian Ashworth, Specialist Registrar in Public Health, Liverpool Community Health Liz Grady, Health Promotion Practitioner, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital Paula Carroll, Health Promotion Coordinator, High Secure Services, part of Mersey Care NHS Trust A paper was presented by Liz Grady and Ian Ashworth on the Network which outlined information on how the network was established, membership and consistent messages delivered. To celebrate Active April, Alder Hey held a get active event on 14 th April to encourage families to get more active. Puddle Ducks supported this event and attended with “Puddle the Duck” to raise awareness of pool safety. It is extremely important to raise awareness of water safety with families to ensure that they are safe when engaging in family activities. Puddle Ducks also offered everyone who attend the event a FREE swimming session for children under 5 years. The event was well received and over 75 families attended, gaining information on a vast range of physical activities. Sarah Bell from Puddle Ducks

Liverpool Community Health recognises that our employees’ Health and Wellbeing can have a direct impact on the high quality care that we deliver to patients and communities. A healthier workforce is better for patient experience, patient safety and clinical outcomes. We recognise that an engaged workforce is more likely to be a productive one and that Health and Wellbeing is an essential part of engagement. Staff in our organisation work across 100 different service locations within the Merseyside locality. Our 3000+ staff are based within a range of different environments covering all settings from ‘Ward to Board’ including Sexual Health Services, Palliative Care, Wheelchair services, Community, District and School Nursing to name but a few! March 2014 saw the launch of the LCH Wellbeing Wheel; an intranet based, staff facing ‘one stop shop’ that incorporates all the different health initiatives and benefits available for LCH staff. The wheel is an eye catching visual and has now helped to form our LCH staff health and wellbeing branding. Its infrastructure consists of an axis, spokes and a number of cogs illustrating to staff that H&WB is not static, will change and requires structure and support. Beneath the wheel, our project team developed a Menu of Services which groups all intervention available for staff under the relevant themes. The wheel is accessible from any computer or mobile working device that staff log in to. The wheel was launched on the April 2nd and covering a similar 30 day period (Apr 2nd-May 2nd) we saw 57% of staff access the wheel. Some H&WB services promoted through the wheel have seen a 300% increase in staff uptake since the implementation of the wheel. Liverpool Community Health recognizes that staff are often too busy to attend our stop smoking clinics. With this in mind, in conjunction March’s ‘National Stop Smoking Day 2014’ our Workforce Wellbeing team and our Community Smoking Services launched a confidential ‘Fast Track Staff Stop Smoking Service’ that offers support for staff tailored to their needs and schedules. The support available includes: Staff telephone confidential hotline for consultation Fast track access to evidenced based treatment to help staff stop smoking with one of our specialists. Easy access to treatments at prescription cost, close to where staff live or work. Ongoing support from our specialist team throughout the quitting journey. Supportive information to support staff in their journey to good health. Signposting to downloadable apps to assist staff needs We can also help staff to stop using E-cigarettes to help them become completely nicotine free! © Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust

Men’s Health Week is a national event run by the Men’s Health Forum (www.menshealthforum.org.uk) and aims to raise awareness of topics that affect men’s health. Paula Carroll, Health Promotion Coordinator at Merseycare High Secure Services took the opportunity to raise awareness of male cancers, in particular testicular cancer. Posters were displayed that included: Check your balls for the World Cup – highlighting signs and symptoms to look out for Grab your Gonads – detailing how to undertake a testicular awareness check Other resources used included: A testicle examination model containing a 5mm and a 15mm ‘lump’. Patients were encouraged to examine the abnormal testicle for lumps highlighting the importance of self-examination and changes to look out for. In total we engaged with over half the patients in the hospital and over 50 staff members.
