Translating Between Words and Math Unit 2.2 Pages 54-57

1. 7 + x = 2. 4x = 3. 2x + 1 = 4. 36 / x = 16 36 19 4 Warm Up Problems Evaluate each expression. x=9

Changing words into Math Symbols. Objective: Students will learn to translate between words and mathematical expressions. First we will locate and change the signal of the operation used, and then write expressions with words.

KEY WORDS In word problems, you may need to indentify KEY WORDS to translate to math equations. How many Jelly Beans are in the jar ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBVqWln3Be0

SUM ADD. These are the KEY WORDS that are used when a problem wants you to ADD. PLUS BOTH IN ALL TOTAL COMBINED ALL TOGETHER ADDITIONAL

DECREASE SUBTRACT These are the KEY WORDS that are used when they want you to SUBTRACT. DIFFERENCE NEARER TALLER LESS THAN MORE THAN REMAIN FARTHER

PRODUCT MULTIPLY These are the KEY WORDS they use when they want you to MULTIPLY. AS MUCH OF BY TWICE TIMES MULTIPLY

CUT DIVIDE These are the KEY WORDS they use when they want you to DIVIDE. SPLIT OUT OF EACH EVERY EQUAL PARTS SHARED QUOTIENT EVENLY

It’s hard to remember all those words! You should try memorizing them this way. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TXxwNCRgKU

Write each phrase as an numerical (no letters) or algebraic (with letters) equation: 287 plus 932 Answer: 287 + 932

Write each phrase as an numerical (no letters) or algebraic (with letters) equation: “b” divided by 14 Answer: b/14 or b 14

Write two phrases for the following expression a – 45 Possible Answers: a minus 45, take away 45 from a

Write two phrases for the following expression (34)(7) Possible Answers: the product of 37 and 7 7 multiplied by 34

TRY THIS! Everyone will be given a sheet of Math “word” cards”. Cut them out and when the timer begins, see how many cards you can correctly sort before the timer rings!

Sum Plus Both In all Total Combined All Together Additional Decrease Difference Nearer Taller Less than More than Remain Farther How did you do? …

Product As Much Of By Twice Times Multiply Cut Split Out Of Each Every Equal Parts Shared Quotient Evenly Did you do any better?

Lets try it Again! Everyone will be given a sheet of Math “word” cards”. Cut them out and when the timer begins, see how many cards you can correctly sort before the timer rings!

Homework 2.2  Correctly sort all word sort cards.  start memorizing The “Math word” poems and be prepare to pass them off starting tomorrow.

Translating Between Words and Math Day Two Unit 2.2 Pages 54-57

1. the product of 12 and w = 2. x more than 17= 3. The quotient of n and 12= 4. 7 less than x = 12w 17 + x n /12 X - 7 Warm Up Problems Write each as a numerical or algebraic expression.

ADDED TO When solving Algebraic Expressions, these are the KEY WORDS they use when they want you to ADD ADD. PLUS SUM MORE THAN

SUBTRACTED FROM SUBTRACT When solving Algebraic Expressions these are the KEY WORDS that are used when they want you to SUBTRACT. MINUS DIFFERNCE LESS THAN TAKE AWAY

PRODUCT of MULTIPLY When solving Algebraic Expressions, these are the KEY WORDS they use when they want you to MULTIPLY. TIMES MULTIPLIED BY GROUPS OF

DIVIDED BY DIVIDE When solving Algebraic Expressions these are the KEY WORDS they use when they want you to DIVIDE. QUOTENT

Translating phrases into word problems can be challenging. You can not always place the numbers in the same order as the words are written. 3 less than 7 ? 3 - 7 3 cupcakes – 7 cupcakes… How should we write the equation? Hey that doesn’t make sense!

279 minus 125 13 less than z Take away 14 from j 15 divided by d Remember that subtraction and division are NOT communicative. This means the order the numbers and variables are placed in are VERY important! Z - 13 J - 14 15/d279 - 125

numerical equation Many story problems do not give us numbers to solve the problem. When this happens we are usually asked to find an numerical equation for the problem. The Nile river is the words longest river The Amazon River is 4,000 miles long Write an expression to show how much farther the Nile travels than the Amazon. Length ? Length 4,000 miles N - 4000

The Big Island of Hawaii is the largest Hawaiian Island. = 4,028 miles squared. m Maui is the 2 nd largest Hawaiian Island. Let Maui equal m Write an expression for the difference between the two islands. 4,028 - m #1

In 2005 California had 21 more seats in congress than Texas had. Let “T” represent Texas. Write an expression for the number of seats California had. 21 + T #12

Homework 2.2 Page 56 Due: Wednesday Sept 30th  14-27 You do not need to show your work on this assignment.
